Default Ball Guide? What parts are these?

The heat has not been kind to some of the plastics on my machines.
What are these parts called, and what are their functions? how important are these things?

The Model B has a spring at one end of it, but I cant tell for what purpose? I had to take it off, because I cant close the door when its on.
The Comet II seems to be a softer plastic that has shriveled in an attic for who knows how long. I think the plastic goes along the underside of the play fields lower boundary wall?

im not sure to be honest

the model be seems to provide support to the track

other machines with the rubber at the bottom seem to do two things.. dampen the track as the ball falls on it and the little fingers seem to keep the glass from rattling so much..

Keeping the glass from rattling...that is the only thing that makes sense to me! It seems to serve no other function. I have even entertained "dust control" as a possibility.

I have one machine that has a very similar guide, but of hard plastic. It too has a spring which keeps it in contact with the underside of the ball launch track. I can see no purpose for it being spring loaded...the guide does not form part of the launch track, and there is no way to disengage the spring short of removing it entirely. In my machine, the tab on the track that the spring attaches to is broken off, and the machine works just fine.

I would concur that the rubbery guides dampen the glass rattle. They may also apply some english to the ball as it launches.

379D43FF-7DF9-4354-81B6-A265BD2C45D1.jpeg When they are complete , they do press against the glass on the top level. On the bottom, I kinda thought it was to keep it on the track In the unlikely low power slow shot, and it may stop the ball from falling into the field perhaps. I checked my machines and one or two had them, and some were badly melted... I don’t think it makes a difference.
