I don't see a gray housing. The lower green housing should have bells in it to signal an overflow.

In all other pachinkos the balls just run out the back. In a recycler, the played balls keep the payout mechanism full and therefor the upper hopper doesn't have to be refilled as often, probably so they could sell games to older parlors that still hadn't upgraded to automatic ball handling systems yet (and put those poor girls out of work!).

There are games that have an electronic version of this - Nishijin's Kan-Less system. Very rare/hard to find.

The only thing on your machine that uses power are the light bulbs which can be ran off a 9v battery or a wired 9-12v adapter. Use a fuse is you use an adapter, but not required for a 9v battery. The machine operates just fine without the bulbs, it just adds a bit of fun to get a flash of light when you hit a win pocket and also a solid light to let you know when your ball hopper is low on balls.

With most pachinko, any ball that you shoot will cycle through the machine and drop out the back into whatever receptacle you use to catch your balls and all payouts happen from the upper hopper. With the recycler model machines, the balls that do not land in a scoring pocket fall out of the machine into the lower tray on the back. Payout are made from the balls in this lower tray so instead of having losing balls falling out the back and of no further use, the losing balls in this case pay the jackpots thus being "recycled" rather than lost. If you win more balls than you lose into the lower tray eventually the lower tray empties and balls from the top hopper will fill the lower hopper. Presumably, at some point the upper hopper will empty and you'll need to refill it, but it happens MUCH more slowly than machines that don't recycle the losing balls for payouts.
