    Default Caille Doughboy

Found a reasonably priced slot machine on eBay a couple days ago. 2050-12-31 23.59.59-39.jpg My new job has me working "manditory overtime" so I decided to buy something that I normally can't afford. Searching the web don't pull up much information on Caille slots. Seems they were made "well into the thirties", according to one source. When I specifically searched "Caille Doughboy" I seen a lot of images of basically this machine, with a round double jackpot. I'm assuming that the round jackpot is newer than the square. I'm guessing early to mid '30s.
2050-12-31 23.59.59-40.jpg On my Mills, the payout for 3 bells is 18 coins. This one pays 15 to 17...when I hit 3 bells it paid out 16 coins. I asked the seller why...he stated that there was a variable thickness to the older nickles. Not sure if that is true...but it sounded good. 2050-12-31 23.59.59-41.jpg Like all antique slots in a wooden/cast aluminum case, the back comes off to remove the mechanism. The 2 thumbscrews at the bottom loosen, and the bars lower to allow the mechanism to be removed. I have often wondered why older slots had 2 very small cups to catch the winnings. 2050-12-31 23.59.59-42.jpg The winnings from "regular" payouts fall into the cup on the right (viewed from the front), and the big jackpot from hitting BAR-BAR-BAR falls into the cup on the left. 2050-12-31 23.59.59-43.jpg I wasn't sure which was better...with flash (first pic), or without. The mechanism is dirty, oily and functional. The wood was stripped and refinished. The cast aluminum was stripped and painted as well. The chrome around the jackpot and along the right and left edges are in bad shape...but included separately. No pics of them because they are still in the car.
2050-12-31 23.59.59-44.jpg2050-12-31 23.59.59-45.jpg2050-12-31 23.59.59-46.jpg2050-12-31 23.59.59-47.jpg The mechanism is considerably different than a Mills mechanism. The horizontal bar across the front can be pushed down, when a nickle is inserted, to cycle the mechanism when out of the case. The damper on the right is apparantly to soften the return of the handle. The handle stays down as the mechanism is cycling, then snaps up at the end. The damper should soften this return...but is acting like an old worn out shock absorber. At this point, I pull the handle, then return it upright while the reels are spinning, then let go after it stops. The rubber stop that the handle rests against is torn and needs to be replaced. Probably from the handle snapping back. One end screws off of the damper, so it may be able to be rebuilt. The seller has another mechanism with black reel strips that he bought for parts. I tried to buy it, and it will be for sale, but he wants to research what it is worth first. I would like to get it to take apart the damper and try to rebuild it without fear of destroying the only one I had.

2050-12-31 23.59.59-48.jpg I like how the spokes of the reels are thick and welded to the reels. My Mills are stamped steel (1963), and Brains Beer has plastic reels (unknown year). The jackpot does not automatically fill up when the regular pay tube is full. The coins just overflow into the area where a cashbox once was. I'm using a small plastig tub that came with a pachinko machine that almost fits perfect! There is an entry ramp for coins to fill. Not sure why it don't work. I suspect this area.2050-12-31 23.59.59-49.jpg The hook end (over the lemon) is bent towards the reels. Not sure if it should be bent or flat. The spring wrapped around the screw is home made and seems to work...but needs to be trimmed to fit. Assuming that it is correctly installed. The bronze part that it touches lifts and coins roll to theleft...in the area of the jackpot fill ramp. I thought the aluminum bar on top needed to be below. !st of all, the spring would lift, pulling the right side down and away from the bronze part. But the homemade spring could be wrong. 2050-12-31 23.59.59-50.jpg The shape of the bronze part looks lihe the aluminum bar is in the correct position. No time to tinker with it now. I think the end bent towards the lemon should be flat. Hard to tell whe in the case. I'll play with it later.
Ordinarilly, price of high dollar items is not discussed...but I am happy to say that I paid $750 for this. It had about $9 in nickles in it...so that paid for my gas to drive to KY to pick it up!

I posted in my thread that a great place for parts for old Mechanical slots is “SQUIRES AND CORRIE” in San Mateo. Steve Squires is extremely knowledgeable.

    Nice pictures and explanation.
You should try a Jennings. My machine pays mystery jackpots.

When you have time go on the internet. Their is a collectors forum and their are manuals listed. Nice machine.
I also collected coins and this machine was made in the time of the Buffalo nickel. They were not made well and soon wore off a lot of the coin. Hence the variable payout. I am sure that is why Caille made the payouts with the variables. I think you will find with the Jefferson nickel your payouts will not vary. The jackpot would look real cool in my opinion filled with Buffalo nickels.

    Good luck and great purchase.

I called Squires and Corrie this morning about the damaged trim pieces. He has them on a front casting...but they are almost impossible to remove without damaging them. Very nice guy, he will check around to see what he can find, and call me back.

I also asked about a book on repairs on Caille machines, as I had trouble finding one. He stated "thats because there are none."
I also stated that my jackpot window is square, and most Doughboy images I saw were round. He confirmed that it is older than the round window version. Forgot to ask what year range it is.

Sifting through "coinopcollectorforum.com", I believe it is a 1935! "It is most likely a Dough-Boy (1935), because it has 10-stop star wheels and the earlier type of JP feed at the bottom of the escalator, compared to the 20-stop Cadet (1936) model"
This is an answer to a question about a mechanism that was pictured. I noticed that my Doughboy has 10 stop "star wheels"
2050-12-31 23.59.59-48.jpg and 20 symbols on each reel. This makes every other symbol just "decoration".

Somewhere else in the forum, it was mentioned that the lever below the escalator 2050-12-31 23.59.59-49.jpg was opened when the reels showed 2 cherrys. I have not looked into this yet.2050-12-31 23.59.59-41.jpg I'll take a better pic later. In the lower right corner of the mechanism is the "clock". Caille used a hydraulig regulator as opposed to a gear driven one. Seems to have given people problems in the past. There was a great link that I bookmarked. Need a better way to save it...very useful information to me! https://www.flipjuke.fr/regulateur-h...e-t103436.html
OK...I previewed the post...checked the link...even though I had it translated to English, It still links in French!

Hyrdaulic regulator...as opposed to a clock. 2050-12-31 23.59.59-59.jpg 2050-12-31 23.59.59-60.jpg The top brass nut clearly has been tampered with. It is reported to be exceedingly hard to remove. There is one on the end of the cylinder (that is not visable in pic #1) as well. Copper washer between cast iron and brass net on each end. Supposedly...originally filled with "Sperm Whale Oil", which is typically...dark, and stinky. Brake fluid seems to be an acceptical subsitute for rebuilds. Mine seems to work acceptibly, so no need to tamper with the "hydraulic clock". 2050-12-31 23.59.59-58.jpg The screw, below the stamped number, is an adjusting screw. Reportedly, it can adjust pressure from NO FLOW...to FULL SLAM. I have seen no need to adjust this.
I do think that it could kick the reels a bit stronger. this could be as simple as removing the reel bundle, and cleaning, polishing and lubing the moving parts.

About a week after buying the machine, the seller said he would sell the "parts mechanism" for $100. This was cool, because...that was what I was thinking when I was still there, to avoid driving back.
Original mechanism 2050-12-31 23.59.59-84.jpg 2050-12-31 23.59.59-74.jpg Front and back. 20 symbol reel strips, 10 position stops.
Parts machine 2050-12-31 23.59.59-87.jpg 2050-12-31 23.59.59-88.jpg Front and back. 20 symbol reel strips, 20 position stops. The 20 position vs 10 position stops (looks like a "star wheel") seems to be the line between 1935 & 1936...from the internet research that I have been able to do. The Doughboy was introduced in 1935. Notice the payout tube and cash box overflow tubes are tin on the older machine vs brass on the newer machine.
This means that it is not likely a good candidate for a parts machine. The parts would make it work...but hurt its value. It is an invaluable "learning tool". I want to fully disassemble and clean it someday. But more realistically...I NEED to disassemble, clean and oil the reel bundle. The reels just dont spin fast enough...the third reel almost stops before the brake locks! I can practice, and learn from mistakes on the "parts machine", before trying any work on the original.
Original 2050-12-31 23.59.59-77.jpg 2050-12-31 23.59.59-78.jpg Parts machine 2050-12-31 23.59.59-80.jpg As you can see...some parts are missing from the parts machine!
    Original 2050-12-31 23.59.59-89.jpg Parts machine 2050-12-31 23.59.59-92.jpg
The casting for the escalator is broken in two. One of the mechanisms that I wanted to study. A jar of screws and small brackets was included. The older machine has a "cast" arm/lever, where the newer machine has a steel "bar" that has a twist in it. The parts machine has been "tampered with...but the seller says that he hasn't touched the original mechanism. He is the one who painted the front casting, and refinished the wood cabinet.
The reel bundle is interesting as it has a LOT of cherries! There are cherrirs on every reel. You could get: CHERRY, CHERRY, CHERRY! I wonder what that would pay? I am curious to see if the black reel bundle can be swapped for the white reel bundle. If it fits, the payouts would be correct...because the payout discs are part of the bundle. I wouldn't keep it that way...I like the "older" parts, the cast iron and welded spokes on the reels.

Tinkering with the doughboy today. Trying to figure out why the reserve does not fill on "cherry, cherry, any".
when you hit "cherry, cherry, any", the last 2 vertical payout arms (farthest right) move into holes on the gear plates. 2050-12-31 23.59.59-168.jpg 2050-12-31 23.59.59-178.jpg The far right arm is foe 2nd reel cherry, that is why there is an adjustable hook on it. The hook can only lift when both cherries are aligned. If only 1st reel cherry, the last vertical arm (with the hook on it), will pass the 1st gearplate, but get blocked by a "non cherry" part of the 2nd reel gearplate. If only 2nd reel cherry, the gear plate from 1st reel "non cherry" would block the last payout arm, preventing hook from lifting. When the hook lifts, it pivots the horizontal bar2050-12-31 23.59.59-179.jpg, allowing the brass cam to fall down. 2050-12-31 23.59.59-180.jpg Actually, I believe the brass cam falls because it is pivoted by the weight of a "tail" on the lever on the opposite side. Which has been cut off! 2050-12-31 23.59.59-176.jpg Easier to see the file marks on the real thing. For photo evidence...I hold up a broken part from the parts machine. 2050-12-31 23.59.59-173.jpg I believe the missing tail adds weight to allow the brass part 2050-12-31 23.59.59-180.jpg to follow (or fall) down.
The brass part is pinned to the shaft. I'll need to get a pin punch to try to knock it out.

Very shortly after posting my concerns about the "modified" part on CoinOp collectors forum http://www.coinopcollectorforum.com/index.php I got a phone call from a member there. I had talked to him before and has been a great help in understanding this machine...which is WAY different from a Mills! He tells me that the portion that is missing is normal for a doughboy. The parts mechanism that I have is from a 1936 (or newer) Caille Playboy. That model is characterized by "no lemons" on any reel. 2050-12-31 23.59.59-83.jpg And has lots of cherries. I have not seen a paycard, so I don't know what 3 cherries pay out. The part that I was looking at 2050-12-31 23.59.59-173.jpg is for the Playboy, and Cadet models. It interacts with something on the cabinet mounted jackpot...that is not on mine, so no need to swap. Just remove, clean and polish, then a drop of sewing machine oil. However, the brass cam is pinned onto the shaft (tapered pin?), trying to drive it out...improperly supported may break the escelator! The elevator on the parts machine is already broken in two...so, I have no backup.
I'll probably give themoving part a squirt of carb cleaner to flush out gummy oil, oil with sewing machine oil. The less ntrusive...the better.

Oiled the part last night, and worked the part back and forth for a LONG time last night. It now drops a coin into the reserve each time "cherry, cherry, any" is hit! It is reliable, as far as the gate that opens th allow the coin to fall. The escelator jams up often. No pics yet. Nor have I tested the "reserve full, disengage fill sequence" operation. There is a rod (thick steel wire) that extends into the top of the reserve compartment. It is supposed to have a (brass?) ball on the end of the rod. Mine is missing. The coins lifts the ball/rod as it fills up. When full, it disconnects from the refill sequence. I have not tested this part yet.
I do love these complicated machines that work wiyhout electricity!

I have just started my Jennings collection and learn something every day. They are a lot different than the mills machines that I have been more used too. Probably have went overboard. 2 quarters, 2 nickels, 1 dollar, 1 dime and currently waiting on maybe a 50 cent machine. I really enjoy the mechanical slots.
I have been lucky on my purchases except for one of the quarter machines that needs some tender loving care. I am surprised at how many people I have meant that have just bought their machines to display. Old mechanicals need to be played or they do freeze up.
