Default Sacrilege? Should i gut this machine?

    https://imgur.com/a/eImpH

i have a nishijin model B "baseball" machine that i was gifted for my birthday! i finally got around to learning how to set it up. i cleaned it and the balls i was gifted thoroughly. its all mechanically sound and free from 30+ years of gunk finally. But whilst inside i see the background is wrecked and super cracked. From what i have read online i would have to pull all the nails to free the plastic sheet the art is on. and then i could redo the background before reapplying the nails. and before all this i would have to make a tool for pulling the nails...

my questions is... is this a bad idea? is it uncouth to do custom background art and redo all the colors etc. or should i just leave it as is. i wouldn't mind it looking 70s if it were fresh and taken care of but since it needs a fresh coat of love on every surface i might as well redo it all, right? or no? what are your thoughts?!

-i dont plan on reselling it.
-i dont have a particular attachment to baseball.
-it would seem this machine is farely common and not "expensive" or "rare" (please correct me if im wrong)

labor over the next few months/years isnt a big deal. I just would hate to take it apart and find out i should have never went there in the first place because you cant re apply the nails or something dumb.

I wouldn't say gut, more of a face-lift. It's your machine, do whatever you like. I'm interested in seeing what you come up with. I don't know of many games that people would have a problem with being changed and they would probably be willing to trade you one if they did.

If the background is that bad (pics please) I say go for it. Use a tack puller and a small block of hard wood. Nails come out quite easily. Tumble the nails before you put them back in and you will love the results with a new background.

nah ill replace him with a same size and shape zombie or something. i can 3d print whatever shape and paint it to look however. then affix him to the base that the baseball man currently occupies. as well as the baseball background can be replaced with a graveyard or headstones. then the bottom baseball lettering can be sanded down or cut off and replaced with a new name or logo~

I see the potential for some kind of sound board so that when a ball enters a pocket a spooky sound plays. Something can be put in the bell to quiet it down a bit if necessary.

i agree! i saw what ben heck did with their sounds on the firing arm and jackpot but that seemed excessive. triggering sound pre main jackpot seems like the easiest to wire to an arduino ^_^ and i wanted to redo the lights to LED anyhow so this might be the perfect thing to wire it up to and get that all streamlined. maybe it should trigger light flashes and thunder noise or a spooooopy laugh or wolf call haha.

People replace the background all the time. Sometimes with the same design and sometimes with something completely custom. There is a sharp looking Nishijin with a black background on eBay right now. I would never pay the asking price, but the brass against the black looks tight. I like your zombie theme. Make sure to keep us up to date on progress.

Get creative with it. If you're not planning on selling it, you're the only person who it should please.

Most likely those aren't new pins, just pins someone took off a parts machine and polished. If you were local I'd trade you a set of polished pins for your old ones and just throw them in the tumbler for a day, but for the cost of shipping back and forth you could buy a cheap tumbler and polish yourself. There are a number of threads here about how to polish nails both on and off the machine.
