    Default Latest restoration project.

I am currently restoring a Nishijin Sophia Type B. I do a completely tear down. So far everything has been removed. All the plastic is clean and waxed. All the metal is clean and polished. I've sanded the main board and tomorrow will apply polyurethane.
These pictures show the stripped down board. As I start to rebuild it, I'll post more pictures.

For or some reason the pics look right when I posted them, but now look squished....

Very nice. It looks like the same one that I am working on. It is the same backdrop anyway.

Unfortunately this playfield has a lot of water damage. Thinking of doing a replacement.

Do a replacement. It will look odd to have everything new except the playfield.

What are you going to replace the playing field with?

    Check out pachinkorestorations.com and pachinkoplanet.com.

Both are helpful people; that are members on this site...

I do agree that once you have everything removed to the extent you are at, play field replacement is a great idea.

Use the exact same artwork or design your own background (hint - a large fish theme)

There is a sticky thread in the vintage forum that shows the process.
Remove and replace the existing vinyl play field with new vinyl.

Do the replacement. Getting it to that point is the hardest part. Plus it is only a few steps more to pull off the playfield.

Also word of suggestion if you do that. Throw out the posi-drive nails holding the background on and just replace them with 1.25" #8 wood screws. That is what we do, as you'll never drive the nails back in right nor will they hold tight for as long.

Also can't remember if I mentioned it in cardwwi's replacement post. But once you peel off the old mylar. The easiest way to remove the paper stuck to the board is a spray bottle full of water and a large putty knife. Then sand with 150 grit and 220 grit sandpaper (use a palm sander). Then we put on 2 coats of sanding sealer before the new background.

Usually the graphic gets printed on adhesive backed vinyl then a piece of clear mylar over the top.

The original was a paper graphic applied with wallpaper paste and then a clear mylar over the top. A few members do it again this way, but it doesn't last as long as the vinyl will plus it really doesn't look any different when done.

It's done! I did not replace the playfield as most of you suggested. Although I agree it would have looked nicer, I like to have the machines retain some of the vintage look to them.

Anybody know what the hole at the bottom right of the front might be for?
Never seen anything there on other machines.

Time to tweek, adjust and play!

    Here are some pics.

Wow that looks very nice. The plastic and the spinner things are very vibrant. How do you get the plastic to clean up that nice? I also like the new gold pins.

I have the exact same machine and mine does not have that hole in it.

The hole could have been from an added on electric shooting knob??

I go to my local Dollar Tree store and get a product called "Awesome". Spray cleaner that I usually use at full strength. I clean everything on the machine with it. It removes all the grime and smoke residue from anything. I then use a semi-paste wax to keep the plastic parts clean and shiny.
Keep in mind I strip everything off the machine so it makes it pretty easy to get everything clean.

I hand painted the spinners as they didn't have much color on them.

I also pull all the nails/pins. I put them in a rock tumbler, add some Brasso and crushed walnuts. Then tumble them for as long as it takes to get them shiny again.

Auto shooter makes sense for the hole. Thanks.
