Exclamation Beginning of the End? OR End of the Beginning?

So here is what I know:

Japanese government is looking to update gaming laws to decrease its addictiveness by making all slot and pachinko payouts government mandated *instead of by the companies themselves which has been SOP*. This would considerable lower the available payout by more than half.

If the law is passed then old machines in casinos will have to update their existing inventory of games and all new games will need to have meet this standard. This is bad because updating games could be very costly for casinos (if even possible) rendering many games unusable. Smaller casinos will probably go out of business creating less demand from manufacturers. Also many gamblers may not frequent casinos as much because the possible payout is much less...liken it to how many people play powerball when it is at 800 million versus 1 million.

Manufacturers could go out of business because they may have inventory of brand new games that can no longer be sold and lose money on or be developing games that are not dead in the water...Big name companies like Konami and I believe SNK have already said they are "no longer going to support pachi business" and moving on. This means that big intellectual properties like "Resident Evil (Biohazard)", Metal Slug, Solid Snake (Metal Gear Solid?) wont be in games and we will lose more familiar titles.

In the short term we may make out well because we will have a flood of cheaper games coming over to the states in droves because they cannot be played in Japan anymore (and it is either that or the dump for them). So we may see cheaper, newer titles.

But in the long run we could experience really stagnant game design and titles...innovation could suffer...

What are your thoughts on this? Could this be the end of the hobby for many (any)?

To me, long term could be horrible...short term...maybe some newer cooler titles at less cost...obviously I'd rather pay more now and have good games later...but oh well.

So is it the actual payout of the game that's lowered or the value of the payout? I would think that would take a little reprogramming of the payout system, easy enough. Games move out at about 3 years so if this law comes in it may be a phased in thing, over 3 years. And if the payout is less, they could always increase the cost to 'rent' and also the redemption at the window around the corner to bypass the law. Will the odds be governed too? If not, they could lower them so it's a little easier to win. It's a big business, they'll figure it out.

And I don't know about them coming here in droves, they'll either end up in a pile somewhere in the countryside or over to China to be recycled.

It is the amount of balls in the payout won. So yes they could in theory all increase the value of the balls but every casino would need to be on board. The fact that major developers are backing out of making machines caught my attention more than anything else.

and as far as your last comment, not if Frank can get his hands on them first
