Thank you very much to both of you. I think since I dont have any way to test other than my meter (will expand that testing equipment soon) I'm going to replace the components I have on order and see how she does. Will chime back in once those items have been replaced. Looks like a few weeks on one item (slow boat shipping I guess) but once I do! Good news or bad I'll be back!

The diagram is pretty much as shown on the SMPSU chips data sheet for a step down converter with an external PNP switching transistor. The only difference is that the current limit resistor is omitted. If you replace the components on your shopping list, I'm fairly confident it will run OK. It'll be a good idea to have your meter connected across the new 1000uF capacitor when you first power it back up, if it goes much above 12v then switch it off quickly!

    Hi Dave,
Thank you, I will make sure to do so! Some parts have come in so I've started replacing components, but will be a bit of a wait on the 2SA1396 . Not sure where its hailing from....moon guessing from the shipping estimate

    Thank you !

    Well ...... What Happened????
    Did it get fixed?

for a electrolytic capacitor to blow like you are describing more than 3 times the voltage is at the cap. What is the voltage at the emitter? Did you check the voltage divider circuit between the 100 and 1k resistors? since the 7805 can take up to 35V Im assuming the transformer tap is between 24 and 36 volts( due to 50v cap after diode ) If not the switching transistor (I assume you replaced it over 3 times) And not the IR3M03A (same reasion) I would check the 100k feedback resistor or the 1k-100 voltage divider circuit.
please let me know - I suck at electronics lol
    Where's the "ANYKEY"?
