Default I wanted to say "Hi" to my Pachitalk friends

I'm writing this while standing in a train station in Nara, Japan. I spotted my first parlor today. Didn't get to go inside but it will happen soon! Keep an eye on this thread!

I'm not sure why I am unable to upload photos from my phone. I constantly get "Upload of file failed."

I may have to wait until I return home.

I did did make it into a parlor to explore. They don't like cameras. I requested to take pictures of the machines only and they were okay. But of course I'm eyed with suspicion by everyone else. It's almost 7pm here. I'm having dinner with my son and after this I'll return to the parlor to play.

    2 MB?!

I've returned from Japan. I did get to play several times, unfortunately they do not like cameras in the parlors. Also, I found at least one of the "windows" where the prize tokens are traded for cash. It wasn't in a dark alley as I thought it would be, but rather in a foyer just outside the parlor doors. It was nondescript and about waist high with a small opening (less than a foot square) with a stainless steel shelf in front to set the box on before pushing it into the opening. This particular parlor was in the basement of a large department store called Bic Camera (kind of like a Fry's Electronics here in CA). I didn't spot the little window until I left. It was near the escalator that exits the basement.

I included a pic that was downgraded to less than 2 MB. I hope the image quality didn't suffer too much:

Okay, I resized a few pictures from the Japan trip. Tried to keep them pachi related but I have to admit I loved the food over there so I tossed in a couple of pictures of some of the food we tried.

Japan is probably the first country I have visited where I didn't tire of the local food. I could name half a dozen countries I've visited in which I've longed to return home just because the food had become monotonous and lacked variety. In Osaka, the first city we stayed in, a tiny city block (and city blocks are tiny there) would typically contain about a half a dozen tiny restaurants that each specialized in a small menu such as ramen, or sushi, or udon, or Indian, or just about anything you could think of. And they all seemed to be excellent. Everything was always clean and the food was always fresh. Both my wife and I loved Japan for many reasons, but the food was one of the big ones.

A friend of of mine is a pro baseball player. Abut a year ago he began playing for the Orix Buffaloes (Osaka's pro baseball team). We tried to catch a game but missed him by a day; the team was up in Sapporo the next several days. He recently returned to the states and he came to my place a couple weeks ago. He said he did not like living in Japan. He said the white players on the team were treated as second rate and he found the Japanese people somewhat unfriendly and even racist. I did not experience anything like that. Clearly they are an entirely different culture and when you don't speak the language, things can be awkward. But our experience was nothing like his.

Never won won anything in the casinos. I tried the slots as well as the pachinkos. The first parlor I went to in Osaka was foreigner friendly with pamphlets in numerous languages at the entrance with instructions how to play.

Nothing like having your lunch looking back at you

Seems that Japan has a love for Kit Kat bars. Did you try the green one? Was it melon, tea or seaweed?

Thanks for sharing about your trip

the style of the buildings is interesting to me.. its like a modern 1950's america... to hang a giant pea out, since no one in america would do that any more cause the cost of such a thing would be immense. back in the 50's they painted huge murals on the whole side of buildings. there they put massive led/plasma billboards up.. dont know the age of that parlor but to me it as the style of the late 50's early space age 60's..

I just find the look so culturally different.. neat pics

I'm doing this on my iPad so the pics don't seem to be in any order. The Kit Kat pictured is green tea but they had a variety of flavors from banana to roasted potato and red bean. Weird. Food pics again. Our first restaurant near our apartment in Osaka was no bigger then a hallway in my house. There were six seats at a bar wit virtually no space behind you to the wall. The place specialized in ramen and the meal was prepared right in front of you by the owner. It was so narrow, taking a picture was difficult. These types of places were wonderful to eat at. Great food always and generally a friendly conversation could be had with the owner. The picture of the bowl topped with tempura I believe was from an Udon restaurant a couple days later.

We we met our exchange student Mako and his mother Mieko in Osaka. They next day they took us on a trip to Kyoto and had a wonderful dinner at the end of the day. I believe we stayed in the Osaka area for four days. It was beautiful but largely flat and suburban. One thing I noticed in Japan is how neat clean orderly and efficient everything is. We had just traveled from Hong Kong and it was a nice place to visit, but as we took the train from the airport into Osaka itself the difference was amazing. On the elevated portion of the tracks heading into the city, it really looked like a model mock-up of a city. Every square inch of land is used to its fullest potential and even things that are old such as some of the buses or buildings are neat and well-maintained to the extent you thought it was new.

Tokyo was was much different. A little more chaos (but organized chaos), more people, and a much more busy atmosphere. But at the same time, everything was still neat and orderly.

Also pictured red is the wiki page for my old neighbor who played for the Osaka team. Sounds like he won't be returning and is a free agent.
