there should be a second light circuit that is a jackpot light as well

Just tried wiring it there is a short in the negative screw. I will have to make a new point for the power to connect so that probably is never happening

I fixed the short but now both lights come on when a jackpot is hit and nothing lights up when the tray is empty. I'll eventually figure this out. I'll start a new thread when I begin that process.

looks like your providing power to the wrong post... us the two on the right side not the lower post on the left

cool. thanks that works. I was just going over it again and again tracing the connections on those two posts and finding no way that both lights wouldn't come on. I was assuming there are only two screws and the previous owner must have put them in the correct posts.

Should I put a resistor into the circuit. The 9v battery gets hot during play

Thanks for the help everybody. and Moparformances for telling me the right place to hook up. that sorted the overheat problem. I checked with a multimeter across the two points.
    wrong one 5 ohm
    right one 16 ohm

so with a 12v supply it was pushing about 2.7A that's why I smoked the first power supply and the battery was getting hot because 9v it was drawing 1.8A
right now I'm stress testing with a new power supply. I have the jackpot light on and i'm going to let it run for a while.
