    Default Hong Kong Bound

My son graduates from San Jose State at the end of next month. To his surprise he learned he won an internship for the summer months in Hong Kong. He will leave the day after graduation and return at the beginning of August.

Hong Kong has been on my bucket list for a long time, however, it is not on my wife's. I'm hoping to do four or five days at the end of his stay and then return home with him. It's totally up in the air whether the wife will go. I'm trying to convince her but she's wavering.

If anyone in the group has been there before and can recommend some sights, etc., I would appreciate it. Also, we have the option of going elsewhere at the end of his stay and departing from another airport/city. I have to try and keep the cost down since my wife may come (I should not have married an accountant).

If there are any cost-effective and interesting places you can recommend, maybe as a layover on the way out, please give me some ideas.

    Thanks!!

What courses or studies is your son taking that lead to the opportunity in Hong Kong? Great chance to see some of the world

Never been there but Shenzhen always looked interesting. From what I've seen, it's the doohickey capital of the world.

His degree is in MIS (management information systems). Hard to believe, when I joined this site he was only 11!

Just watched some video on Shenzhen, you're right. And very close, no need for another flight.

Ocean park (amusement park. super fun!)
Stanley market (touristy awesome area with lots of fun cheap stuff. I heard the drive here can be really "interesting" as the roads are very narrow)
Nathan road (big city downtown shopping kinda stuff)
    lan kwai fong (nightclub district)
Golden Arcade ( electronic shopping center)

My husband spent a lot of time in Hong Kong and these are the places he recommended! Have fun dude! And congrats on your son's accomplishments! I bet you'resuper proud!

Thanks Buck! This will give me something to research and I'll send the information to my boy so he can make some arrangements while he's there!

Some good news, now my wife is actually contemplating the trip and planning that if we do go, it will involve several days in Japan! It appears flights between Hong Kong and Tokyo are inexpensive which opened her eyes to the possibility.

Most of the Japanese kids we hosted came from the Saga/Kumamoto region and we actually only remain in contact with one of them anymore. There's a ton I'd love to see in Japan but for those of you that could provide some insight, maybe you can recommend just a few must-sees considering our time there will likely be just a few days?

Stick with a major city like Tokyo or Kyoto. To much to see in a few days

Unbelievably my wife is now all-in on this trip. After talking with a few people and finding out that airfare from Hong Kong to Tokyo is only about $160, this trip has exploded from a few days and probably just me to five days in Kowloon, and than a flight to Tokyo and seven days there to include one night in Osaka, two nights in Kyoto, two night in Takayama and two in Tokyo. Obviously my wife must have fallen and hit her head but maybe it's for the better.

Any further advice? Are we being redundant with some of the sightseeing in some of these cities? Can you suggest alternatives or nearby places to these that we can visit while we stay? Chris and I both like to skip the tourist traps when we can and find stuff off the beaten path.
