    Question My Vintage Nishijin

    Hello.

In the mid-70s, my brother and I convinced our parents we had to get a pachinko. I've long thought we got it from a store in the St. Louis area that sold only pachinko machines. After reading-up on them this week, I'd say it's possible it was a JC Pennys or Sears instead.

At any rate, I lugged it almost 900 miles from MO to MD with the full intent of replacing the glass, cleaning it up, and adding power for the lights that never got used. Imagine my surprise to find water stains and the background faded (I believe it's Sunrise). No surprise to you, I'm sure, but to me it was a shocker.

I popped open the upper tray and couldn't find any model letters/numbers. The Sunrise link above says the graphic is likely from 1972.

My intention was to give it as a gift for my niece and nephews, but now it's looking like a bigger project than I expected. Would anyone here have any more details or thoughts on this Nishijin?

Hello PlaysWithWolves and welcome to the group!

While most vintage models seem to have water stains and/or have faded, they are still very enjoyable to play. I have multiple vintage machines and the all have much of the same weathered look from the past four decades. Many members have also restored their own machines to various levels and have gotten a lot of satisfaction by doing so.

looks like a nice machine sure it has water-stains but allot of them do... its a nice Model "A" machine so its great for home use.. give it a good cleaning and pass it down.. it would look amazing if you polish it up.. or better yet keep it for your self..

    and of course

I thought that was called a "Thunderbird" center feature.

If you don't mind spending a modest sum, pachinkoplanet dot com or pachinkorestorations dot com can give you a price to replace the playfield. Looks brand new when done...

I did some basic cleaning on it and it mostly works. On one side, the balls get stuck on something immediately before entering the jackpot seesaw. The other side enters fine. I'm not sure if something's out of alignment but that's my guess--cleaning the path with a Q-Tip didn't help.

    I appreciate the inquiry!
It turns out the problem was the horizontal alignment between the brown and clear parts. I guess I didn't move things around enough yesterday, but noticed it after I took pictures.

not exactly a common problem but i have seen that before.. first drill a hole in the plastic and just into the first layer of plywood... NOT TO DEEP.. remove the staples.(carefully the plastic can be verrrrrry brittle..) shim it out with a piece of cardboard... or a few sheets pf paper.. then use the hole and the dimple in the wood as a guide to reattach with a short wood screw

That would correct the track to seesaw alignment...I wouldn't start there. The brown track is securely fastened to the plywood, and not likely to have shifted. I would remove any covers that are easy to remove and block view of how the seesaw is mounted. Inspect the bracket that the seesaw pivots on for separation from plywood. These are generic descriptions of parts since I'm not looking at a Model A machine at the time.
Basically...the brown track is likely where it has always been, and the seesaw has probably moved. Take a closer look and maybe some pics of anything that don't look right.
If all else fails, shimming the brown track will line things up...but won't fix whatever moved on the seesaw.

Thanks for the advice! I'll check both parts.

On a side note, I also found out Pachinko Factory indeed had two stores in the St. Louis area. A few of the ads were kind of interesting:

A fleur des lis style label came off while cleaning. It seemed in decent condition (other than yellowing), so I scanned it at 300DPI in case someone might want to use or reproduce:

It turns out the opposite end of the brown ball tray/feeder--before the seesaw--had become unstapled from the wood. This caused the rest to be out of alignment. D'oh. Screwed in now.

The machine's looking great. Will have pics when finished--or close 'nuff (I'm also waiting on new tulip crown stickers and LED bulbs/battery holder).

I'm having issues with the small metal piece at the bottom of the playing field that's meant to help funnel the balls through the return hole. I think it's supposed to just sit on top of the metal band, but after a few balls it gets knocked loose. I can take a picture if I'm not making any sense, but would welcome any suggestions.

Something corrosive had gotten on the seesaw window. I'd tried cleaning both sides and the stains would not come off. So, thanks to suggestions on this forum, I bought the 3-step Novus plastic polish. It did surprisingly well, and I think to get any better I'd have to remove the window and give it a thorough polish:

    jackpot_before.jpgjackpot_after.jpg

Unfortunately, the front window showing the balls loaded on the hammer didn't fare as well, as this is the "after" shot:

the second window at the shooter is easily removed with screws.. keep track of what screw went into what holes and it is simple to remove clean and return.. should clean up just as good...
