Default Questions on how to make a basic volume controller for loud machines

So I understand the concept of how its done but really not sure on how to do it properly. I know I can buy a premade non solder one from ebay for 13 bucks, but I kinda want to get more hands on with my machines.

    My questions are:

    What type of potentiometer should I be using 500 1k 20k 50k?

Which of the 3 connecters spots do I solder my 2 wires to?

Which spots do I use on a dual layer potentionmeter to connect 2 speakers into 1 potentionmeter?

Does basic speaker wires work and what size?

Does any basic solder iron work?

What is prefer solder to use?

    Is flux needed?

    Thanks for your help guys.

love these.. cut one wire and solder in.. no flux required but it never hurts..

you need one for each speaker.. super small and a good range of adjustment..

    500 ohm linear

Positive speaker connection through the pot. Center and either outside connection on the pot. For dual pot be sure each speaker is the same, centers and lefts or rights.

Speaker wire would be fine, small like the size in the machine.

    Most irons should work fine.

I prefer multicore solder. Has flux in the cores.

I use Silver solder. using a little flux never hurts..but you could get away without it. On my machine I removed the crappy carbon disk pots with 500Ohm rheostats. My machine pushes 10W speakers you could hear the dam thing down the block. My wife loves that about these. One day while adjusting the volume it kept crackling so out they came and the rheostats went in they work great now. When I ohmed them out they put 15Kohm pots on ?????? it was very difficult to adjust as the range was not correct.

I just installed 4 of these last night and they did work great. I recommend for anyone that doesn't mind a small bit of soldering.
