    Default 50's Nisijin

Back from Columbus with my new (old) NisijinKINDLE_CAMERA_1465062447000.jpg pachinko machine. KINDLE_CAMERA_1465062429000.jpg Paid $40 and 2hours round trip drive time for it. Haven't put balls in it yet. I know they will fall out from the broken plastic at the seesaw area.KINDLE_CAMERA_1465062896000.jpg Of course I will function test it soon. But first the obligatory pics! Full back. KINDLE_CAMERA_1465062770000.jpg I could tell from the craigslist pics that the JP plastic area was broken. This didn't bother me, as they often are. I could also tell that something was unusual about the center feature...not from the front.KINDLE_CAMERA_1465062483000.jpg That looks pretty normal. The back side looked different.KINDLE_CAMERA_1465062779000.jpg KINDLE_CAMERA_1465062798000.jpg KINDLE_CAMERA_1465062832000.jpg I didn't tinker with it until I got home, and found what appears to be a Martian inside! Hides behind 2 doors that open and he pops foeward! Going to do some cleaning and tinkering now!

KINDLE_CAMERA_1465062618000.jpg OK...the man in the middle is red, so not a Martain. No horns, so not the devil. Maybe an alien?
Did a function test, and some cleaning. When loaded, if you push down on the long horizontal jackpot bar...paysout like it should. The alien did not pop out, but I found a linkage rod out of place. Fixed that and he pops out for each jackpot. It is still broken due to balls falling out from the broken plastic at the see saw area. I have used plastic from a Listerine bottle in the past to fix britle ball channels.

More cleaning...and a few new pics! KINDLE_CAMERA_1467764474000.jpg this tin chute was hanging vertically, and clearly needs to be soldered back into its horizontal position. Also, missing some more tin that made a downward facing chute...as evidenced by the solder trail to the left. Not sure of the purpose of the linkage of the ball stop.KINDLE_CAMERA_1465062896000.jpg It is connected to the see saw. When see saw is up...it is open. During a jackpot cycle it closes, and blocks the jp ball from exiting the machine. When the jp cycle completes, and the see saw resets...it opens, and releases the winning ball. A similar action happens on a model B machine...but the ball holds down the jp lever until the ball is released. On this machine, the ball is no longer on the lever when it is being held back. As you can see...a few nails were removed to make the game pay more. KINDLE_CAMERA_1467766222000.jpg Center and 2 outer pockets. But all lower pockets have a nail hole that would block entry. For each one, there is a captive nail, enclosed in a container on the back.KINDLE_CAMERA_1467764514000.jpg you can see it above the plastic chute here. I have seen this before (I think Max has one). My theory has been, the nail was steel and could been pulled out ith a magnet...therefore changing the odds. This does not seem to be the case. I removed one of the covers, the nail is very tight and does not want to move. It also appears to be brass and is not magnetic. So far...still a mystery. On the machines without lights...there is usually a window to see that there are enough balls in the top hopper. KINDLE_CAMERA_1467765249000.jpg There is a hole in the hopper...but no window, and no way of knowing when the hopper is low. There is a jackpot reserve chamber for when a jp is hit when the see saw is down.KINDLE_CAMERA_1465062471000.jpg It appears to be manually restt by an attendant from behind. KINDLE_CAMERA_1467764739000.jpg the brass part slides down. This drops a winning ball, stored in the reserve chamber, on the other side of the see saw to trigger a jp. I believe the hole near the top once had a brass knob on it. I also believe the spring is to return the slide to the up position. Can't find a place for it to attach to...nor can I think of any other reason for the spring.
Never heard of this brand.KINDLE_CAMERA_1465062447000.jpg Could it be an early Nishijin...before they added the H?

I copied and pasted this from Emmadogs post,(#13 in pachinko evolution, in vintage pachinko stikies).

Dad, you won* Shimizu Kazuji certainly thought up a unique name for this machine. The name isn’t the only unique feature, as the center is set up so that when a ball enters a prize pocket a “dad” doll pops out. Furthermore, there is a small hole containing a thin wire located between the nails by the prize pocket. When a magnet is brought close the wire end comes out of the hole and stops balls. In this way this machine also has an anti-cheating measure. (Showa 34, Nishijin)
**This is the one I referred to in an earlier post with the anti-cheating device. Simple and clever and also interesting that it is not seen on more machines. Maybe cheating was never a large problem. It's the machine in the 3rd pic and if you look closely, the small holes for the anti-cheat pins can be seen just above the 5 bottom pockets.

I made a plastic cover out of a dvd box.KINDLE_CAMERA_1467505603000.jpg KINDLE_CAMERA_1467505620000.jpg Not very pretty...and certainly looks like it does not belong! The plastic is a bit too thick and a little tricky to work with. However, it does keep the balls from falling out of the machine. The jackpot does work...but not reliably. I seem to have tracked the problem down to this area.KINDLE_CAMERA_1467505792000.jpg The little wheel that is touching the hinged brass linkage lifts and folds the hinge. This releases the trap door that drops the prize balls. It doesn't seem to lift high enough. I can't figure out why. There is no binding of the moving parts. I have looked at from all angles. I'm going to tinker with it some more...but I don't plan on tearing it completely down. The wire sticking up is to open the doors for "DAD" to greet you. The large bracket is to protect it from damage. I took it off to wire brush the dust off of it...using a brass brush so as not to scratch it up. That really old dust really clings tight! And to take an unobstructed pic of the linkage.KINDLE_CAMERA_1467509941000.jpgKINDLE_CAMERA_1467509975000.jpgKINDLE_CAMERA_1467510048000.jpg I'm really happy to know the name of this machine! And now I REALLY want to get a copy of that book...even if is is written in Japanese, and I can't read it. It would be fun to page through and look for other machines that I might have. More realistically...look at machines that I wish I had!
