Default Tired machine needs TLC - hopefully not a junker

Hi there! I am definitely new to this and didn't know I wanted an old pachinko machine until I saw one at the thrift store and had to have it. I know it's nothing special and pretty beat up but I loved the look.
The price was right (at least I hope so?) at $25 after my coupons and stuff and as far as I can tell everything is in tact and functioning - we also tested the lights and they seem to be good too. Haven't run the appropriate number of balls through it yet, didn't want to invest any more until I knew it was worth it. Front glass is missing.

No idea what happened to the paint on the playfield elements, gonna guess it was left in the sun for a long time ... it's REALLY dusty too, and I understand that replacing the backboard art is quite an undertaking, though it might be a fun project for someday.

I think all I want to start with is cleaning it and repainting all those dolphins. I'm an artist, not a mechanic or engineer, so if everything in the back is OK I think I'd have fun working on this. Do you have any suggestions for an appropriate paint to use once the pieces are stripped? Hobby enamel? Artists acrylic (since the balls shouldn't be hitting them at the front)? Something else?

    Thanks for letting me share!
Here is a link to a bigger version of the photo of the back as well - mhILqm3.jpg
