    Default How loud?

How loud are vintage machines compared to modern. I live in an apartment and I currently have a modern machine and I've had to unplug 2 of 3 speakers to quiet it down. On a scale of 1 - 10 a modern for me is a 10 what is a vintage?

Interesting question, you'll will probably get many varying answers....Most of the loud sound on a vintage would be from the winning balls and emptying the machine...in my opinion I would say about a 5 during payouts and a 7 possible 8 from draining the balls (give that a 9 if you forget the catch tray or a 10 if they pour onto a hardwood floor ).

just shooting the balls can be noisy and also if it has a bell that rings every payout

The bells could be dampened down if needed.

Also a consideration is glass vs plexiglass/perspex on the playing field of a vintage machine. I have a machine of each and the glass is definitely louder as the ball taps it as it makes its way to the bottom.

There are many variables and great responses here. I live in a very quiet apartment community so I constantly keep noise levels in mind. I would place my vintage machines at a 2 compared with a 6 for my moderns. But my 2 + 6 could be a 1 + 4 to someone else. The biggest noise creator for my modern games is the sheer volume of balls in play, shooting and winning, compared to a low percent on the vintage games.

Having plexiglass in mine reduces the bounce/tap noise a lot. Plexiglass offers safety for little kids and pets as well. I have also deadened the winning balls bell by putting in a small wooden or plastic wedge against it. If you have the rear of your game enclosed then that would reduce the noise even more. I have one modern completely enclosed and the only noise (other than speakers with volume controls) is the dull thud of the balls falling into the box inside. In this encased unit I would give it a 1.

two pieces of glass or plexi will keep the noise down.. i think vintage machines are way quieter then original modern.. volume controls change everything...

Great responses here. You can significantly reduce the noise on a modern by installing volume knobs inline to each speaker. You can totally turn off the sound or adjust to a low level. I believe you can also buy kits from Japan to convert to earphones instead of speakers, but I've not tried one.

Vintage machines can be significantly quieter, but still get loud when paying out jackpots and rapid firing balls. One suggestion I did not see is to buy a vintage single shot machine. You manually load each ball before shooting so your pace is much slower. Fewer balls in play means fewer jackpots. Fewer jackpots means fewer bells ringing. I love the repetition of a single shot and many of them had really cool center features and play fields. Much less garish than many of the 70's machines. Single shots aren't for everyone, but I find them the most relaxing to play of all my machines.
