Sometimes, they don't make it very long while shaking. In that case, be sure to have an extra towel handy.

I can hear it now - "Honestly - I was just cleaning it and it went off."

    tulsa,

maybe you should raise the number of posts required to pass tokie owens to like 400 to get them to post even more?

I did a lot of searching around on the net after reading about the token cleaning system. I learned alot about coin cleaning for coin collectors. The common theme is that most cleaners remove a % of the metals and if cleaning can be avoided it should be as it degrades the value of the coin.

Since this is directed at "fine" coins I did not really concern myself too much but in reading through this it was also apparent that many coins have a treated surface to prevent tarnishing. Both brass and copper rely heavily on these treatments. Ie Copper exposed to the elements turns green and anyone who has ever owned a brass instrument can attest to the effort they put in to keeping it shiny.

To cut to the chase the recommended cleaning is the one that uses a plate at the bottom of the sink with minimal abrasive chemicals.

I dropped a few tokens in my wifes ultrasonic jewlery cleaner and it worked great. She hid it shortly after as I have about 10k tokens. So if anyone has an update on the professional cleaning systems like the one at the beginning of the post that would be great.

I roll my tokens into wappers. Gives me an estimate of what my addiction would cost me if I took it to the street. So it would be no problem to run them through the cleaner before dumping them into the wrapping machine.

I use my tumbler that I clean my shell cases with. I tumble the tokens with pecan hulls for about 4 hours and they come out shiny as new. It is all I had to use and it worked great.

Try an old method of cleaning silver - put a piece of aluminum foil in the bottom of a glass dish, and use a solution of baking soda/water. Dump the coins in - the oxidation comes right off silver plate - and might work on brass as well.
