    Default Advice on repairing cell

So I have an Eva 8 Cell that is having some animatronics issues.

This is now a spare cell, and I'd like to see if I can take it apart and reseat or realign items that may have popped off their tracks.
So the animatronics are on the front of the cell. right before the screen, any advice on where to start disassembly? tips or tricks?

    Thanks,

    Rob

I can offer some insight, I had to take my Star Wars apart completely for flood restoration. First you may have to remove the outer cover (if it's got one), then I think you should be able to just take all the screws to the outer part of the main housing where they attach to the plywood play field; once you pull the housing and all that stuff (most of the boards) off you can pull out the screen and access the front area....everything should come apart with a small phillips head screwdriver.

Hard to say really. As every cel I've done is different. Some require a little more examining first. But they are mostly seperate modules that connect back via a cable.

Usual way. Lay the cel face down on a towel. Remove all the main clip on boards. Unscrew the big plastic surrounds from the wood backing and slowly seperate them, watching for any trapped or plugged in cables.

    Don't forget to take pictures

    Ditto, take lots of pictures!
It also helps as you remove or disassemble something to put the screws back where they came from, that way you don't lose any and don't have to remember which ones go where.

So I'm making some pretty good headway so far... I fixed 1 issue once I could see the gears.. and now I am attempting to unbind the horizontal bar that travels up and down. I can see the vertical bar and have a good idea how it functions but its blocked by the horizontal bar. I will need to disassemble further to get to the motor mechanism. Its probably next to the Evangelion logo motor mechanism which is my 3rd issue.

Not real difficult to take apart.. all the screws are the same, the only obvious difference being the screws that secure the outer case to the plywood which are wood screws. I was real surprised at how easy it was to get to the LCD screen. and how simply it came out. Re-Assembly is going to be the chore.. but not too difficult. I wish there was a way to test prior to putting everything back.. but I doubt it.

Then just stages as I removed screws...

Much easier then working on a laptop... so this should be cake..
Assuming none of the gears or anything are damaged or destroyed already.

So going further. I managed to seperate the frame that houses most of the animatronics from the plywood front.
Doing so allowed me clear access to the Evangelion logo and was able to fix the binding issue pretty easily. Now it moves freely and no longer binds... I would say that's fixed.
so 2 out of 3 problems solved.

Now back to the 2 bars that make a cross. The vertical bar works and is free to move from left to right. The horizontal bar is whats binding and is my 3rd and hopefully final issue. I figured out how the vertical bar works pretty easily.. with access now to the other motor and drive assembly I should be able to unbind the other part. Wish me luck... I'll probably need it on re-assembly.

This is the rear of the Particle board or front of the cell. You can clearly see the mechanism for the Evangelion logo at the top..

Front and rear pictures of what I am calling the Animatronics frame you can clearly see the 2 parts of the head, the S2 Engine (orb) and the vertical and horizontal bars.
and this is where my attention is focused next.

So for the most part its back together. I had a few extra screws left over, so I went back through and located where they go. I have 2 cable organizers left to install and thanks to the photos I know right where they belong.

So for anyone else looking to do this.. patience.. and everything is color coded. Not real hard... now eventually I put this cell back in the frame and see if it works..

    Thanks guys...
What still concerns me are the 2 bars (horizontal and vertical) that form the cross at certain points. When I had it apart neither was binding. There is a servo which controls what at best appears to look like a hook which hold the bar in place... when power is given to the servo it moves the hook and allows it to freely travel. Other then playing with both and making sure it moves when that hook isn't engaged there is not much else I can do.

If the servos arent responding I could just get away with disabling the motors so its doesn't grind. The cell still works.. or at least it did before my time with it.. lol

Well bad news, I was able to fix some of the issues. But now the top bar and the eva head crash into each other.
Cell works fine other then that. Kind of disappointed but nothing obvious to fix.

Sorry to hear that. Mine makes a helluva racket when it drops, but nothing grinding or crashing, just your standard deafening pachinko noises. Prices on YJapan are dropping on the 9's so maybe you'll find a replacement cell if you're interested. I've also seen the Eva 10's showing up, but still too pricey for my liking. 6 months from now they'll be 1/4 of the cost.

Did you try using the reset buttons and clearing the memory first?
