    Default Help with volume pot

I am doing my first volume pot I purchased from Radio Schack and noticed three prongs on it for two wires. Can anyone help me with which one will not have a wire on it?

You can use either outside post and the center post. I believe 1 and 2 post will act as you would expect, lower left and louder right. 2 and 3 will act reversed of that.

    Hey folks,

About a week ago, I started working with Radio Shack pots to use on my Azteca. I started out with a 100K stereo pot, and I was unable to get any sound through it. Went back and got a 10K pot. It allowed the sound to come through, but the sound went to zero with just a slight turn of the pot. Tried a 5K pot but could not tell much difference from the 10K. Then I noticed in a search of the forum that someone recommended a 1K pot. Went back to the Shack, but they had no 1K pot except some teeny tiny thing that I was not willing to try. The folks at the local Radio Shack knew less than I about the use of pots, so they were not much help. If anyone knows a Radio Shack item number for a workable pot, could you post it? I know you can use a resistor, but I would really like to be able to adjust the volume with a pot.

    Best wishes,
    Dave Wile

I couldn't find anything I liked at RadioShack. Just order the L-Pad from Parts Express. It works great. I've used it on all the machines that I've had to add volume controls to.

I haven't had any better luck with those than I did with the ones at Radio Shack. Depending upon the machine I have experienced much the same thing as David. While it will reduce the overall volume, there's absolutely no range to work with.

I have my best luck with those tiny pots from Syscom.

American Syscom pots, www.pachislo.com , is the way to go. They are cheap, they ship quickly and they work. No mess, no fuss.

I bought a couple 10k volume control pots from Radio Shack #271-215 and hooked it up with one wire on the middle prong and one on one of the outer and it doesn't work. Any suggestions out there. It's on a Sammy machine. Help !!

When you say "one wire on the middle prong and one wire on the outer" are you speaking of the "+" and "-" wire? If so then that's your problem. What you need to do is cut one speaker wire in the middle then attach one cut end to the center terminal of the pot and the other cut end to one of the outer terminals. Leave the other speaker wire alone. While this is the proper way to wire the pot, from what others have said I'm guessing that you need one rated far less than 10k. I've ordered some of the small, pcb mounted ones from pachislo.com. At 5 for $15.00 what's not to like?

Autoslot is carrying volume controls similar to Pachislo.com, but for less $ and you don't have to buy 5 at a time

He has some cool new auto-stop / credit mod stuff too, but that's a different thread

I have nothing against Pachislo.com, but I think Vince's prices end up lower even when his $5 flat-rate shipping is factored in, he plugs Pachitalk on his main page and contributes here on a regular basis.
