Default Please help identify my latest antique shop find.

Hello PachiTalk community, I wonder if you may know something about my newest addition to my pinball collection. This pre-war(?) pachinko-like curiosity is just crying-out to be cleaned, restored, lit and hung on the wall to look cool. There's very little left inside, other than three manually-pulled ball drop mechanisms, two light bulb sockets and a 10V AC buzzer.

Do you know what type of machine this is?

Many thanks for any info you might have.

    Cheers,
    Hamish

Its a Smart Ball machine. and a rather old one too. I would guess that it was probably built around the 40's based on the simplicity of it. That being said I have no clue how it works.

    100 machines and counting...

Very nice find, any wood rail type of game is IMHO a neat treasure. Welcome as well.

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies. I think I'll have a go at restoring it. It seems to be missing one internal metal ramp, and I need to buy a vibrating tumbler to clean the rust off all the metal parts. It's also missing a bottom board, and some parts of the wooden body have been repaired with edge pieces of plywood, so I get to learn some new woodworking skills as well!

Electrically speaking it's also straight forward. When a ball lands in the holes with Japanese writing (I'll call these Kanji holes, but I'm probably wrong), spring switches make contact with the horizontal metal release-bars. A ball on each side of the bar will complete a circuit and light a bulb or sound the buzzer. I'm not sure if it needs balls in all these holes, or if the three groups relate to the two bulbs and buzzer, but that should be easy to get working off a battery.

When the release wires are pulled, balls will bend the thin spring switches and fall below. It looks like those balls will roll to the back of the machine, so that may be the reset mechanism to start a new game.

Balls in the 300 point holes all fall into the metal ramps under the playfield. There's a hinged captive-ball section on the curved ramp that looks like it will release two balls at a time, once a ball in the right-hand most Kenji hole is released. That ramp extends past the Kenji hole, so I suspect there might be another ramp missing - one that would collect the other Kenji holes and feed the balls into the hinged captive ball mech. Balls coming from this mech fall to the tray at front of the machine, along with balls making it to the bottom "0" holes. These balls can be then be placed back on the plunger for another shot.

The playfield itself is interesting. It seems to be made of some sort of stiff plastic, and has come up from its wooden base - I'm guessing it was glued on. I haven't taken it apart yet, but the pins are mostly easy to pull out, so I'll strip the playfield and clean it. A small test patch with alcohol & magic eraser took off a lot of dirt and bought out a much richer colour from the paint. No paint came off onto the magic eraser, so I don't think I'll need to repaint it.

How many balls do you think it would have used?

This will be a slow process, but I'll keep you all up to date with my progress.
