Default Penguin

New toy!KINDLE_CAMERA_1443656445000.jpg It appears to be an arepachi. It shoots 16 balls...pauses, then shoots 16 more. Lining up 4 or more adjacent spots at the bottom wins balls. KINDLE_CAMERA_1443662463000.jpg Not sure how many, or what the variables are. There seems to be a sequence of events that must be followed.KINDLE_CAMERA_1443661732000.jpg #1 GO is a pass thru that activates a 3 digit counter. I assume it it powered by a random number generator. I didn't take a good pic, the red thing to the right has "3open7" over top, and a 3 digit display below. I thought that the top tulip would open each time you pass thru.KINDLE_CAMERA_1443661865000.jpgWRONG! I am not sure if it is 3"anything"7 makes it open...or 333 or 777 ??? I am not panicing, thinking it is malfunctioning. I believe that dropping mere dozens of balls dropped thru is not enough. It a parlor machine after all. There are #'s on the tulip...maybe hitting those pockets (at the bottom. drain pockets?) Will cause it to open. Suffice to say...it hasn't opened for me yet! KINDLE_CAMERA_1443661927000.jpg Target area #3. Don't know what it does yet. It is not terribly loud, I cant find any volume controls. KINDLE_CAMERA_1443661060000.jpg This is me, wishing I could plug in my Daverob dongle. I can't...not without pulling out the homemade dongle siliconed to the port.KINDLE_CAMERA_1443661096000.jpg Hopefully nothing is soldered!

You have to hit a "333" or a "777" on the electronic "reels" to get a "fish on" which opens up the gate for target #2.....you then have a 1 in 5 chance of getting a ball inside the appropriate hole inside the fish (the one that is marked in red) only if you get a ball in the rotating red hole in the fish do you proceed to target #3 and a chance for a fever. If it goes in the wrong hole, your back to square one. Then you start shooting for target #3 which will open the gate below it, which in turn starts the fever round and the crazy electronic beeping and "music" that makes this one unique!

Surprisingly, it's not quite as difficult as it seems....i've hit a fever on it many times in the few months I've had it.

KINDLE_CAMERA_1443657942000.jpgGood to know! I was thinking 333 or 777. I suspect this to be a ground wire. Never stripped...wasn't even hooked up in the parlor. I'm not entirely happy witb the power connection.KINDLE_CAMERA_1443658084000.jpg

Been playing a bit. Seems to shoot 16 balls and pause. I wondered about weak shots that fall into the lower tray. Apparantly shooter count is not what pauses the shooter. Needs 16 pockets to pause. However, it pauses befote the last ball falls. In other words, you can launch 100 balls, but your wrist was weak, and most did not make the playfield...the shooter will pause after 16 balls are in play. The shooter pauses, and waits to see where the balls fall...then paysout, then resumes shooting. I don't know how it knows when to pause...but it only pauses after 16 balls have reached the playfield. Still not sure all about payouts...but 4in a row pays at least 13. The nail pattern makes sure that this is not easy!

I haven't counted specifically but it pays out around 20-25 balls if you get 7 balls in a row at the bottom! Basically the game resets after you launch 16 balls (not unlike an arrange ball machine), I like to see how many times I can hit target #1 to spin the "reels" with 16 balls....4 spins out of 16 balls is doing really good IMO

The payouts from "arranging balls" in a row at the bottom are peanuts compared to when you finally hit a fever, you'll need 1500 balls minimum to not constantly be refilling it. Also be warned, the very high pitched electronic fever music might make your pets go crazy if you have a cat or dog! Mine don't seem to care for this particular machine.

KINDLE_CAMERA_1443658811000.jpgBeen playing it a bit. Shooter seems weak...and "ground ring" too sensitive. I looked for the telltale yellow paint that typically marks the various points of interest...no paint.KINDLE_CAMERA_1443658941000.jpg Not good pics yet...but I'm working on that. I looked without taking anything apart. Looking about with a flashlight, inside a cabinet. Can't find anything that looks like a knob.
Better pics when I figure out how to link my good camera to my tablet.

Is the shooter not strong enough to launch balls to the right side of the play field even at "full throttle" of turing the shooter? Mine takes an inch or so of turning before the balls actually make it onto the play field.....but it will launch the balls at 100% all the way to the bumper. The shooter on this one is a bit more "sensitive" than other modern machines i have just for reference.

It shoots to the right far enough. It's strength is fine...more like not sensitive enough. You have to turn the knob farther than "I" would prefer to get into the powerband. Maybe this is normal and nonadjustable on this model. The sensitivity on the ground ring...which is not really a ring. The finger bumps that rotate are chromed, I expect this is the ground for the shooter. Just touch it...without any rotation, and it shoots a ball partway up and into the lower tray. Would like to tone that down, just a hair.

I'm not aware of how to change the shooter strength; sounds to me like yours is woking "normal" if it does launch them to the other side....maybe someone else will chime in if they know if the shooter is adjustable? The best method I've found to keep the first several balls from not making it to the play field and hitting each other is to quickly turn the knob most of the way to launch the first ball at 80-90% strength, then quickly pull it back to around 50% or so for the 2nd and remaining balls....once I do that I've got the "feel" for this particular shooter which I agree is indeed a bit more tricky than the shooter on say my Sankyo Lumina frame. Hope this helps!

Moving into what was once my rental property. Decided to build a bench to display the machine.KINDLE_CAMERA_1454801257000.jpg Two 2x4's are screwed to studs on the wall, top with the other 2x4's attached to complete the frame. The only leg is screwed to the frame, and simply resting against the wall, and on top of the woodwork.KINDLE_CAMERA_1454801311000.jpg I'm going to attach some brackets to the leg to woodwork to keep it from being kicked out from under it.

Now that I have a place to keep it, I can tinker with it. Had a few things I wanted to change...but being so heavy, can't open the front and work with both hands without it falling over. I cut a piece of closet pole to prop it up when open.KINDLE_CAMERA_1454499242000.jpg this was was too dangerous! So ,I bought some folding toggle bolts and corner brackets. The hole required was too big for the corner brackets. They needed a big washer...none at the new house. But I did have plenty of Heinekin bottle caps! KINDLE_CAMERA_1454301119000.jpg Bad pic...but very secure! Now I can open it, and it is VERY stable. Now the problem of what to do with the cord...didn't want to pinch it between the cabinet and the wall. KINDLE_CAMERA_1454300888000.jpg First of all, the transformer was in a bad place. Balls would get trapped behind it...can't be good! So I relocated it to the cabinet. KINDLE_CAMERA_1454331465000.jpg It was probably mounted to the frame before it was put in a cabinet. I then drilled a hole below it, and through the bench as well. The cord was made into the transformer on the input side, so it was cut, soldered and shrinktubed. Now I could power it up and test it. Seems to have the same problem as before...balls going to the payout motor stop flowing...causing the low ball indicator to light, and stops the shooter. KINDLE_CAMERA_1454499299000.jpg Labeled "short supply information" for some unknown reason. I have removed the upper tray and the whole track leading to the place where the balls stop...cleaned thoroughly, even though it was very clean anyhow. Still gets a stoppage at the same place.
I got "333", and landed in the "V zone" for a "fish in"...and experienced a stoppage again! Music blasting, lights flashing, "short supply information" lit...and shooter stops working! I also hit 333 again before the stoppage. I opened the front and used a pick to move the balls past the stoppage. Once enough balls filled the payout motor area, a bunch dumped into the front tray...and jammed again. Repeat several times. When finally caught up with payouts, play resumed as usual. As usual, another stoppage! Since I have work to do at the house, I unplugged it and will troubleshoot it later.
As with all machines, it has a power switch. Since it is after the transformer it is not used to turn it off, as the transformer is still powered up. I plan to add an outlet box to the bench with a switched socket to turn it off without opening it or unplugging it.
I'll troubleshoot it later...hopefully it will be something easy!

I've had the same issues with my Penguin before; there are 2 issues I've found that can cause a ball jam with no payouts as you describe. Both can be fixed with some tinkering.

1. Balls not flowing from the outer chute down to the ball counter/payout mech (usually tapping on chute or banging on the top of the machine will dislodge), drain all the balls if that doesn't work and try again.

2. Ball stuck in payout mechanism (listen for for faint "clicking" sound like the motor is trying to turn, it helps to have a Daverob dongle for troubleshooting, it forces the payout motor to try to turn), manually clear out the stuck balls by turing the payout wheel with your finger (clean the payout wheel, they get filthy). You my need to do a hard reset after by holding down the reset button for 10 second on the inside of the lower right side of the rear of the machine near where the error codes are shown on the back. Good luck!
That sounds exactly like the problen. The stoppage is in fact the outer track, and right at the ball counter. Tapping it doesn't make balls flow, I had to use a pick to push them through. Access through the slots in bottom of track. Is not hard to push through, but there is some resistance. Once balls are filled back to thois point, still wouldn't shoot. Tapping the counter area caused a payout. Would flow balls for a minute...then jam again. This was during a "333" payout (a reach?) so a DaveRob dongle was not necessary to force payouts. When draining balls, still hangs up occasionally. Removing, cleaning and inspecting the whole top tray and feeder ramps did not reveal any clues. I expect a mechanical blockage somehow. I will focus on the ball counter area since that is where they stop. Plus it easily slides out by depressing a tab. I was trying to add a Gaku pachicounter at this location, and had the penguin ball counter in and out a number of times. Don't know if the problem was happening before that or not.
I,m not at the other house to test the 2nd theory. I do have a DaveRob dongle, so I will give that a try. I had to switch back to a standard bypass dongle when I screwed it to the wall. When the DaveRob is installed it touches the wall and presses the circuit board in about 1/16". I'm going to look for a short cable to let it hang down, or Velcro it somewhere. I will use it for troubleshooting while the door is open. Thanks for the tip!
Mine has the same odds as yours, 1 in 43.857. I've heard this machine is "angle sensitive" too, is yours mounted completely perpendicular or tilted back 2-3 degrees? I adjusted the mine back to about 3 degrees or a half inch farther back than it was previously mounted in the cabinet. Seems to help...if it happens again I may try cleaning my balls as perhaps they are a bit dusty/grimy after a year's use? Or maybe try switching to 1500 smooth un-engraved gold balls I've got in my flying carpet and see if that makes any difference since I've got many different batches various pachinko balls (some engraved some not) in my Penguin (maybe there's a sticky or odd sized ball in the mix causing issues? .) Not sure what is the root cause of the balls getting stuck but apparently it's not an isolated issue!

Thanks for those links! It always amazes me all the things members find for others!
I don't own this...was just sifting the 'bay for pachinkos. It is interesting to learn about moderns like this. Makes more sense why so many people love moderns! Most that I have played don't have much of a goal other than "shoot for the start pocket", making them not much more than a vintage with a light show and a video slot machine. I think I would like the one pictured above, as it appears to have "more of a goal to achieve. I don't even remember what it cost...and don't need to recheck...because money is too tight to be buying toys right now.

By the way, my Penguin/Apollo one frame started having same ball blockage issues this week, no payouts, and “short supply” light on. What worked for me was completely removing the ball chute that goes from the hopper to the ball counter, and removed the panel where the balls are fed into the payout motor; there’s a white plastic ball path thing that diverts the balls in an “S” shape that can be completely removed from the frame for cleaning (both inner and outer ball tracks). Then scrubbed off all the grime on the ball tracks with hot soapy water and cleaned everything really good; basic maintenance basically. Also need to make sure the wires around the payout motor and ball counter don’t get caught in the cover panel when putting it back together! But it can be done in 10 mins with a Philips head screwdriver! Works great again! 😁
