Common sense told me to check the leaf switch. As soon as I unscrewed it...a wire fell off. It must have been laying on the other contact. I have often had solder problems with the leaf switches. Seems odd that machines that are so overengineered (is that really a word?), they would do a poor job soldering the switch. But then again, it IS probably close to 40 years old...I don't know what year PowerFlash machines were made. I'm guessing around1975...I haven't checked the sticker. I wedged it between the leaf and the plastic, it works intermittently...but at least I found the problem.
Correction to my previous post...the white wire goes directly to a relay, not a solenoid.

Maybe it had candy goo on it...and it fell into the machine, and landed there. I like to think it needed just a little more weight to play reliably...and a nail was glued to the weight. It is attached firmly, and I decided to leave it alone.
