Default Anyone try replacing the play-field board with acrylic?

Just a thought I had earlier today.

One of my favorite aspects of these old machines is how everything is mechanical. There are levers and linkages and all sorts of gravity-powered awesomeness.

I think it'd be kind of neat to take a vintage with a roached playfield backboard and replace it with plexi. You'd be able to see all the mechanics and watch the balls pay out and whatnot.

I figure one could either use a really thick piece of plexi/lexan/whatever, or you could use stand-offs to space out two pieces of thinner material to the appropriate thickness. (The latter would be more of a pain but still doable)

Could have a laser-cutting or water-jet place do the cut-outs and whatnot.

Anyone see or try something like this? Thoughts?

I've started one. I have the machine and the acrylic, but other projects have taken over and I've not gotten very far with it.

I HIGHLY recommend against laser cutting. Any kind of heat source will generate stress that will reveal itself as cracks in the acrylic. I've heard of people laser cutting intricate pieces out of acrylic to come back the next day and find the piece had shattered just sitting on the counter top. Even if the piece doesn't self destruct, the cracks will be unsightly.

Besides, a router and using the original playfield as a template are a whole lot easier and cheaper.

and use cast, not extruded acrylic-it's less prone to stress fractures but it is more expensive.
