    Post 3D Printed Pachinko Parts

Figured it would be best to start a new thread on this rather than continue it in the making new parts thread.

I recently have actually been 3D printing a few parts for various machines now. It usually doesn't take me long to make the files and for when I just need one part it works out great. It also gives me some freedom to modify parts if I know of a common break point or to make it look nicer. However, all the parts I upload here will be as close to original as possible or slightly modified to guarantee it will print correctly.

I have previously used Alumalite and Aero Marine molding & casting products and now I probably will not be using it anymore. While cost of parts between the 2 methods is debatable on which is better; I have the printer and several spools of plastic so it doesn't make sense for me to go back to casting, but I will add what the estimated cost per part is. Plus with how few parts I end up needing, printing them makes more sense to me. (Also I didn't always get good results by casting)

Anyways these are the parts that I have made so far.
    • 1972-1977 Nishijin Model B Track cover
    • 1973 Nishijin Model B Playfield Rebound bumper cover (simplified)
    • 1973-1975 Nishijin Model B Playfield Rebound bumper
    • Round shooter rebound bumper (designed for 1964 Heiwa but should fit various 70's machines as well)

In the works (well what I want/need to make)
    • 1972-1977 Nishijin Model B rear tray (will be 2 parts)
    • 1964 Heiwa ashtray
    • 1964 Heiwa lens

As a note all the parts that I upload I have printed, tested, and designed specifically for 3D printing. So there shouldn't be any problems with them. (if there is let me know and I will try to fix it)

I will be posting a few more replies of the parts individually with my print specs, pictures, .STL and solidworks files. (If you want another file format tell me and I can probably make it)

Default 1972-1977 Nishijin Model B Track Cover

Here is the one part that everyone seems to need most. The 1972-1977 Nishijin Model B Track Cover. I took measurements of the original and have made some minor changes to the part. The changes made were I widened one of the front tabs, widened the supports on the bottom angle, and narrowed the finger tab. However, these changes do not affect the fit of the part and I can confirm that the metal slider & spring on the original covers do fit with no modification.

As for the slider I made it as close to what the original looked like. This one is about double the thickness (due to less strength of plastic vs. metal) however it does fit and work perfectly. I also had to modify the spring mount on the slider but it does work just like the original.

Overall the part does have a little more flex than the original. However it isn't nearly enough to be any sort of problem. I'm sure if printed in PLA it might be a little stiffer (But I like to print ABS).

To make the cover you need:
    • Main body file
    • Slider file
    • #4 x 3/8" pan head screws (#4 x 1/2" will work but the very tips will stick out, but could be ground down)
    • Spring (haven't had a chance to look for a source yet but will get this post changed once I do.)

    Print Specs:
    • White ABS Plastic
    • .2mm layer height
    • 5 Shells (5 top & bottom)
    • Infill 60%
    • Supports on (1.5mm gap at 60 degree angle)
    • Print time was 1hr & 23min with my printer (had to run it slower than the time the program gave me)
    • Material used 13.77g which is about 35 cents.

Print the parts oriented as shown

Here is what it looks like during various stages and finished
    imag0104.jpgimag0108.jpgimag0112.jpgimag0113.jpgimag0115.jpgimag0111.jpg

As a note no sanding was needed on any part. Cleanup time with a standard razor blade took probably 20-30 minutes (wasn't really paying attention)

Each zip file contains both the .STL and Solidworks file.

Also I forgot to make a note in the first post. All files I am posting as creative commons and can be used freely but the files are not allowed to be sold. Printed parts can be sold but the files or a modified form of them ARE NOT allowed to be sold at any point. http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/

    Default Bumpers

Okay I'm going to squish the other 3 parts into one post.

Also as a note from past experience the Model B bumper is ever so slightly different than the Model A (no clue why) but you can replace the whole thing and it will work fine.

1973 Nishijin Model B Playfield Rebound Bumper Cover. This has the same overall shape as the original. However, I left out all the little teeth on the front because I didn't think they would print and they always break off. I also made it slightly taller as the originals were a tad short. It does still work if you want to reuse an original bumper (why would you when you can print a new one. )

    Print specs:
    • White ABS
    • .2mm layer height
    • 3 shells - all around
    • 40% infill (don't think there is any really)
    • Supports on (for nail head pocket) 2mm gap 45 degree angle (doesn't need much but you can go smaller)
    • Print time was roughly 30 (from what I recall)
    • Material 2.58g which is 6 cents

    Capture.jpg

1973-1975 Nishijin Model B Playfield Rebound Bumper. Exactly the same as the original in every way. (Even got the curve right)

    Print specs:
    • Ninjaflex - Lava (only color I have right now)
    • .25mm layer height
    • 5 shells - all around
    • 55% infill
    • No supports
    • Print time was roughly 55 minutes (have to print Ninjaflex slow)
    • Material 4.24g which is 42 cents

    Capture.jpg

1964-1977 (possibly) Round Shooter Rebound Bumper. Designed for 1964 Heiwa but should fit many machines from the 70's. Sankyo should be one of them. It is 17mm in diameter and height.

    Print specs:

    • Ninjaflex
    • .25mm layer height
    • 5 shells -all around
    • 60% infill
    • No supports
    • Print time was roughly 45 minutes (have to print Ninjaflex slow)
    • Material used 4.53g which is 46 cents

That's some neat stuff. I'd have interest in what it would take to make a ball dump chute for a '75 Heiwa.

    Default 1964 Heiwa Lens

Got another part done. Though this one is pretty specialized and I don't see many people needing it but figured I'd post it because someone might need it.

This is to replace a lens that was missing on a 1964 Heiwa single shot that I'm currently working on. I have no clue exactly what the original looked like (though I probably have a picture of one on my computer here somewhere. ) Anyways I just took some dimensions down and made a part that I think looks similar to what the original would have. This part is just a decorative piece and serves no purpose at all. Though with that said I printed out 3 different parts till I got one that fit correctly. So trust me when I say I make sure everything fits correctly. This part does require holes to be drilled after printing as they would have been too small to print (also I couldn't guarantee they would line up correctly either).

    Print specs:
    • Blue ABS
    • .2mm layer height
    • 3 shells - 4 on top (for sanding and polishing)
    • 30% infill
    • No supports
    • Print time was 40 minutes
    • Material 8.56g which is 21 cents

    Capture.jpg

Picture of part in place and previous variations. I will fill in the H with paint. Also I do apologize for the somewhat awful pictures; I've gotten lazy and am using my phone to take them.

Also added to my list now will be the 75 Heiwa dump chute. But may be a while before I get there as I got one more part for this single shot I need first.

Well... just for the sake of completeness... I'll drop in the light-cover/ball-deflecterino/doo-hickey that I printed for my old Kabamaru-kun Nishijin hanemono.

    IMG_0064.jpgIMG_0065.jpgIMG_0066.jpg
Pic 1 - where it is when its in
Pic 2 - what it looks like when it's broken/missing
    Pic 3 - The part

Note that this isn't an exact replica of the part - just an approximation of the shape. I didn't remove the intact lens on the opposite side to check it either. But underneath the graphics, they both look fine. Note - scale the .stf by -1.00 about the x axis to print one for the right side.

printed with translucent PLA - .25 layers, 2 perimeters, 25% fill.

    Zipped STF: kabamaru.stl.zip
    Woof!

I sent the files from this post for a nishijin track cover to an online printing service. They wanted $11.00 each which is not really bad if you need the part. Once they show up and I test them I will report on the results.

I got the track covers from Solidworks today. I really have to tip my hat to Max for an exceptional job on the files. They are outstanding. The quality far exceeds the recast pieces i have purchased in the past, as well as the ones I recast myself. Now I just need to find springs, but that should be trivial. Also, I need to find a source of printing which can get the cost lower, possibly by purchasing in bulk.

At this point dealing with a 3D printer in the current state of available models would be more expensive and more trouble than it is worth, but hopefully high quality and easy to use units will become commercially available in the next year or so. Anything other than a hobbyist unit is just too darned expensive.

#77 spring at ACE hardware. Prefect length, tension, and loop ends. Cost me $1.29 each (have to find a better place to buy in larger quantities for a lower price.)

Im with Carl on this one. While it's not the most econimical I will happily support the smaller, and especially independent, hardware stores. As we move toward a society of big box stores and disposable everything, the small stores that have those little odd-ball peices of hardware us tinkerers need are becoming a dying a breed.

Totally agreed. I just said that if someone was looking to make say 10 or more of them. But one here or there I'd just buy from a small hardware store because they have the parts I need instantly.
