Question Horsing around with an idea...

Found this here contraption on craigslist, and in a fit of lunatic optimism dragged it home. It was really cheap, in hindsight probably not cheap enough.

Here we have a 1946 vintage Bally Victory Special. This was the cheaper replay version of the payout game Victory Derby.

    horsaround1.jpg

<sigh> This one has seen better days. Seller said it had been in a barn. Didn't say "since 1952" but that's what it looks like. Didn't get a lot of water on the playfield, but sharp eyes may notice a lump near Purse #6 hole.

    horsaround2.jpg

    Backglass missing 40%+ paint.

Here's a snap with the front stuff out of the way. Backbox just stands there. hmmm....

    horsaround3.jpg

Here's the backbox with a pachi-sized outline in masking tape. hmmm again....

    horsaround4.JPG

Here's the backbox again with pachi strapped to it. lol.

    horsaround5.jpg

Here's the innards. Bunch o' rusty machinery. Celluloid disc for jackpot projector warped into an odd bowl shape. Didn't touch it so it hasn't crumbled to dust yet.

    horsaround6.JPG

If I scrap the gray wire I should get most of what I paid back. ha. It's all gray.

The back doors somehow stayed with it all those years.

    horsaround9.JPG

Rusty guts. Monochrome wiring. Lumpy playfield. Funky backglass. Front door missing coin machinery.

Doesn't turn up every day but not rare. The ones that do turn up have usually been stored better. Maybe even lived indoors. Sometimes light up and semi work.

Restored at any cost or recycled pachi cabinet?? I could put the front door below the pachi shelf and have a bit of cabinet space - not much storage in the playroom right now.

The barn ain't that big. Well, ain't big enough for it to sit and rot anyway.

A few years back there was a pin on cl. The guy said it was in his garage and email for pix. He sent pix of the pin in a stable with big splats on the glass. He still wanted more than I was willing to pay for the privelege of busting it up and hauling it to the dump. Could have hosed it off but p/f glass was about all that was for sure still good. Cabinet wood flaking, backglass had less paint than this one, legs all rust. Should have made him bet the asking price - I pay him if I can pull out the ball shooter, he pays me if I can't.

This thing here could still make for some wall art - Triple Thick the backglass and hang it up in the shop. Hang the lumpy but still attractive playfield somewhere too.

Backbox has top, bottom, back, and sides - make a front and some shelves and it's a pachi cabinet for the playroom with some much needed storage. Might need to see if I can improve on the existing less-than-wonderful repaint job. Shouldn't be a problem unless forced to work in a dark unventilated closet.

It's official. Stick a fork in 'er, she's done.

Unscrewed and lifted up playfield. Little humps in top of board are accompanied by huge waves in the bottom. Huge enough waves to jam the shutter board. Must have been damp in the barn. Plywood glue wasn't waterproof and the playfield board has come apart. Oh well. It will still look nice on the wall. Pix later.

Plenty of good wood in the lower cabinet to make shelves and a door for a pachinko cabinet. There's even a beaded moulding to trim around the game.

Now I guess the big decision is '40s deco paint job or furniture stain and varnish. Paint fits better with the rest of the games in the room. Paint it is. Maybe not purple on cream with red and green stripes and green spots this time though....

there's always a few of those vintage horse racing themed machines and bingo machines local to me for sale on CL and the multitude of vintage goods stores in this part of the world. i love the artwork on those old EMs but have never pulled the trigger on one for several reasons. one being space but as it stands right now i'm at capacity with pinball machines unless i encroach on my shooting "range" but that's not gonna happen.
for future reference this guy is one of the couple of backglass reproducers (print, not silkscreen).

True. A purple stripe, perhaps. Not the whole front of the cabinet this time though.

I see that pin as a completely restorable and potentially beautiful.
For example, I picked up this pin for $60 last year. It was stored outside in the hot Georgia humidity for at least a decade. Here is the Craigslist photo:
    00d0d_1YHgyCMtT30_600x450.jpg
Here is an incomplete list of inherited problems:
    1. Delaminating playfield plywood, particularly around the lower end and side lanes. I had to re-glue, clamp and repaint the graphics before sealing.
    2. All the stepper units in the head were frozen from rust. Some ratchet levers etc were so corroded they had to be soaked in oil and forced apart.
    3. Busted up cabinet, broken coin door. Frozen nickel slide and missing all shooter parts.
    4. Rot and filth.
    5. No schematic. Period. No where, nobody has one. I had to reverse engineer to create one (I am selling them).

    Some "before" photos:
    20140309_203224.jpg20140309_205709.jpg20140309_211610.jpg20140309_211709.jpg

It turned out to be one of my favorite and most attractive pins:

I guess what I'm conveying here is someone would love to restore your pin- and pay money you can flip onto something else you'd like.
We are certainly free to do what ever with our stuff, but I am hoping your pin won't be destroyed.

Which one? The game in post #7 doesn't look like it needs much restoring. That's not the one we're talking about. I swiped that pic to show what the stock paint looks like. Sorry for any confusion.

The game in post #1 is a horse of a different color. #1 is a vampire. #1 needs a bunch of guys to kill pretty games like #7 to get the parts that are missing and broken. Better to drive a stake through its evil heart and fix the others.

    Nice job on Singapore, btw.

    Playfield pix as promised...

    dedhorse3.jpg

Not just a little separated in small areas but a lot separated in large areas. Pieces left screwed on to keep the whole mess from falling apart.

Under p/f. Hadn't seen this before...

    dedhorse1.jpg

Corroded solder crumbling and falling off of corroded wires. Most of the 30+ switches under p/f are like this. Tried melting a few of the better looking connections with the biggest iron I have - crusty solder doesn't melt worth a darn. Finally got a couple wires loose - with a propane torch.

    "Feature Projector"

    dedhorse2.jpg

Two of these units on the top shelf. No idea why one has a brass disc and the other plastic but the plastic one is shot.

Replacements for these parts could only come from another game, and one in better condition at that.

Wow...that is rough! Well...anything is fixable. A thing you might try that "dirtflipper" from pinside showed me was take a 1/2 and 1/2 mixture of CLR and water, put it in a spray bottle and spray down the rust. Make sure you wash it off with warm water right away and dry it off. You'd be amazed at the results.

I fixed up this United Paradise 1948. Bought it for $100.00, fixed it up, put HOURS of work into it, spent another $100.00 on parts, and sold it for only $200.00. Was it a loss...yes, but it went to a good home (hopefully). And yes...it had a button on the bottom to take the credits off! That's funny, because it didn't make sense to me till I watched your video Steve!

Now getting back to YOUR game....you have one big thing going against you. That backglass is pretty shot! I've seen worse, but no matter how hard you try, it's not going to look great when the light shines thru. So new backglass ($350 shipped) and that's if you can find one.

I hate to see a game used for another project, but you might have a point on this one. Tough call. Take the inners, clean them up and put them on ebay!

Oh c'mon now it doesn't look that bad!

I did a restore once, this is all that was left when I started:

And it ended up like this:
