I find painting spinners a bit tedious. Because of this I like to buy spinners. Having that said I have a masking method for painting the 70s spinners that are typically three colors. You know the typical nishijins. I have tried many many methods for painting spinners.......spinning spinners in a drill or straight hand painting to even hiring out electrostatic powder coating at a machine shop. None work as well as the masking method (cost effective counts too).

If anyone is interested in the masking method I will post picks of the steps. Enjoy the cool colors on these spins!!

I'm more interested in how you bought them. And how much, how long, etc.

But also interested in how to paint them.

To paint 70s spinners without having to strip the paint 50 times and start over or have a lopsided color try this method.

Step 1: Buy three hole punches. One with a 1" punch, one with a 5/8" punch, one with a 3/8" punch. (amazon)

    step1.jpg
    Hole punches

Step 2: Buy some 1.99 stickers from office depot. You are going to peel off the stickers and throw them away. Take the no stick paper that the stickers were on and apply your painters tape. This will allow you to hole punch the tape without it sticking to your hole punch

    step2.jpgstep3.jpg

Step 3: Paint your spinner a base coat of white using metal spray paint. I use the $4.99 can from Ace called rust-oleum painters touch. Wait 24 hrs!! this is critical as the paint is dry to the touch after 20 minutes, but paint tape will make it look rough if your in a hurry and apply it to soon.

Step 4 : Use the 3/8" hole punch on the tape and no stick paper. Throw the center out and apply mask over spinner. APPLY SERIOUS PRESSURE around tape to prevent paint seepage. Spray your center color. Wait 24 hrs!!!

Step 5: Use the 1" hole punch on the tape and no stick paper. Throw out the center and apply to spinner. Use the 5/8" hole punch on the tape and no stick paper. Use the center punch out to cover the center of the spinner. Paint final color. ALWAYS wait 24 hrs before removing tape as it will pull just a twing on the edge color if removed early

Final spinner. Note I did apply the tape before the white had dried fully on this one so it looks "rough". I have some that turn out looking machine made. What I like about his method is I don't need a steady hand.

Scary thing is I have a closet full of them. You could almost collect unique spinners and hang em on a board or something.

It might be worth trying Frog Tape to see if it will eliminate the seepage. It is more expensive than regular painters tape, but I have had good luck using it around the house on jobs that require a nice clean paint edge.

    Thanks for sharing your technique.
