Default Nishijin B Ladybug is too easy

My friend recently acquired and has just restored this Nishijin B Ladybug machine. The issue is that the machine as it currently plays is TOO EASY. The ladybugs and side gates never close so the chances of getting a jackpot payout are very, very high. The only action visible is that the right side ladybug can go from moderately open to wide open if you get a ball in the lower right tulip-shaped pay pocket. If a ball goes into a ladybug, the ladybug does not close, but the lower center tulip will open. Is this normal play for this machine? You can only play the machine for a minute or so as it pays out so much that you are constantly reloading the top hopper with all of the balls from the payout and overflow trays. Although an attractive and unique machine, there is no challenge to playing it as it currently sits and any user will become bored quickly. Please advise.

I've never had one of those, so I don't know how they work. But anyway to decrease payouts is adjust the nails to move the balls in different directions.

    100 machines and counting...

I have not had a machine like that one.

But I have a few thoughts:
I doubt it is working the way it was meant to.
What a great game for kids!
Make it fully cyclic; if reloading the top tray is tedious.
Use a smaller payout mechanism (like 11 in lieu of 15).
Bend the nails to make it more difficult.

    that nail pattern is strange..

when it was "restored" was the play field cell replaced??? was the nail pattern changed??

if nothing was change then those lady bugs have to close.. i would gusse that even if the pattern was changed they should close..

Original play field, no changes to the nail pattern. To clarify, I have attached a pic of the left side gate & "ladybug".

They should open and close! Unfortunately, I have never had that model...but if I could find one I would buy it! very cool looking machine! Post a pic of the back please. I am sure the innards cant be seen, but if there are any clear parts that show the internal linkages...it might help. I think something was assembled incorrectly...assuming they opened and closed properly before it was restored. Since it was likely reassembled with screws instead of staples...it should be "easier" to fix. Not saying it is easy to get to the parts in question.

Here are some photos of the back and the back of the ladybug. If anyone else has a ladybug, and could post a picture of the back of it, it would be greatly appreciated.

I can't tell from what I can see. Since there is so much clear plastic...just drop a ball down a win pocket and watch what moves and try to see what should make them close. In the 2nd pic, there is clearly a linkage that goes up to the ladybug, but i can't tell what happens next. More angles may help...but can probably only see so much with pics. The clear plastic is a bonus1 It should make figuring it out much easier!

UPDATE: My friend examined the lady bugs some more and thinks a previous owner may have disassembled them and reassembled them minus some crucial parts (shocking, right? ). After some fabrication in the garage, the machine is now operating correctly with the lady bugs and and side gates opening and closing as they should.

Thanks to everyone for their help.
