    Default New cabinet design

Since I don't like dust on my machine, but love the ball lifter and inner workings of my older machines, I decided to make a cabinet with a glass (or plexiglass) rear door. I also added hooks so I can take the machine out and ship it to someone who wants when I get bored with it.

Very cool. That machine is beautiful and I agree I like the backs on some as much as the front. Nice job.

how does the manual ball lifter work? I understand that it works by turning the handle but in the back how does it send the balls up the tube? Also is there something that stops you from turning and overflowing the hopper?

    thanks for sharing!

The ball lifter is basically a box with a hard rubber gear. On this machine you can slide a lever that will guide the balls away from the lifter and into a normal ball tray or allow the balls to continue into the gear box. Basically the balls just pile up in a track "awaiting there turn" to go into the gear box. If too many balls pile up the fall into an overflow tray. When you turn the crank a ball falls between the rubber gear tooth and gets pushed into the tube. Continue cranking and the balls pile up inside the tube until they reach the top tray. You have to have enough balls to fill the tube up. It has a slip nut on the back so if you crank it in reverse the crank just spins but the gear remains stationary. It works reeeeally well and is actually a very simple design. I plan to make a few. I have figure out how to manufacture metal parts and there is a local plastic shop that will do some stuff for me cheap. Let me upload a couple metal parts I made.

Very cool. Any pictures you can post would be great. I was wondering if maybe you could use a design like that but attach the motor from a drill or something similar where you could push a button and it would do it for you. It would have to move slow though so a drill might be too much unless you could find a way to stop how far the button is pushed to keep it slow and steady. Something for one of us to ponder...

Well they make electric ball lifters. I have those too. Some guy is trying to sell one on eBay right now for like 400 something bucks LOL. There not worth more than maybe 30 bucks i would think. Here is a pic of one that looks just like mine (I don't feel like running down stairs to take a pic of mine). It shows how the gear pushes balls up the tube. It will be fun to make my own

Nice job on the parts. Yes I have seen electric ones but also I agree, too much money for me. Could not justify much less afford... That was why I was thinking about making something. I might someday soon

Put a long fluorescent bulb on the inside of that door and light it up the way it used to be in the parlor. The old ones look pretty wicked that way. My New Prince really rocks with a fluorescent bulb behind it.

Hmm interesting idea. Might try it on another machine this one has kinda run its course. I have several others just like it so when I get to the cabinet stage I might try that out!! Thnx

I really like that glass back design! Not only does it protect the rear of the machine, it doubles as a "display" box of sorts to showcase the restoration of the mechanics. I like that!
