    Default How to clean these?

I am unsure how to clean these metal parts. This one is part of the lower back and as you can see it is damaged from years of dirty balls going through it. I don't want to damage new balls with it and cause more damage but unsure how to clean it. I have used soapy water and then metal polish. Any suggestions what to do here. I don't care how it looks as you never will see it but don't want to cause more damage by leaving as is. Thx!

There are several methods. I personally soak my parts in white vinegar for 1 to 24 hours depending on the amount of grime/rust. I also like evapo-rust (most auto stores carry this). However, I can buy a gallon of vinegar for $2.50 and evapo-rust can run as much as $22.00 a gallon (gallon last a loooong time though). Follow the vinegar bath or evapo-rust bath with a good scour pad. The extreme case and I don't recommend this for your part is a product called acid magic. The stuff is toxic and you need a well ventilated area. It will react with certain types of metal in a bad way. Steel, brass, tin, copper and most metals are O.K. Old machines from the fifties have metal overflow trays on the front of the machine made of a gavanized metal that i have seen have a bad reaction. If you ever need to dispose of a body this is the way to go.

I use #0000 steel wool on all of the metal parts. It's cheap and works well. Just make sure to use some gloves to protect your fingers.

thanks everybody. I have used vinegar with good results removing rust but it can mess with the finish but since this is a part that is not seen i might try it then follow with the steel wool. thx!
