Default Before and After - Big Reds Transformation

Well many of you know and have seen the pile of %&$& that was big red. I finally decided to try my hand at a 1950s restore and must say I think it turned out well. This machine was missing parts and was broken. It was a very bright red. Let me know what you think it is a 1952 machine and I have found a way to read the japanese writing on it and will post the manufacturer if is is buried in the writing a little later.

Wow! What a beautiful machine. I have a machine that has been painted that I would like to eventually refinish. Would you mind detailing the steps you took to restore the finish on this one? If mine turned out half as good I would be happy.

Very impressive! I like the natural wood look SO much better than the painted red look! What did tou use to replace the cell with? Looks much brighter than before!

All you really need is a lot of elbow grease for the wood. I disassembled the entire machine and sanded the heck out of it. I could of used some paint stripper (In fact I tried a little on this one), but I found you still have to wipe and sand nearly as much as just going after it with 60 grit (if the paint soaked in deep otherwise 80 grit) followed by 120 followed by 220. Many people like to do 80 followed by 220, but my wood shop teacher recommended against such a large jump (yes I am taking a wood shop on week ends LOL). After that just follow the instructions on a can of stain and seal. I use minwax.

Just the good ole 3M controltac car wrap vinyl. Underneath the jackpot you could see the original color, it was naturally a little brighter, but I wanted to add a little punch to it.

If you do 80 followed by 220, there will be scratches left that 220 won't remove...well it can, if you use enough and sand long enough! So your instructor is correct! I have done a couple of '50s machines...and I have used boiled linseed oil. almost done 006.jpgalmost done 009.jpg Not that I have a preference...but I had it for oiling the walnut stock for an M1 Garande. I liked the results...so why buy something else? Looks great!I didn't replace the cell on this one, because it was in good shape.
