Default Purchase spinners direct from japan

I have spent quite a bit of energy trying to refurbish my spinners. They just don't come out very good. I have tried several methods:

    1. Masking the spinners with tape. Can't get the tape right and it often bleeds cutting circles is never perfect ect.

    2. Masking using different size washers from the local hardware store and painting with paint or a pen-painter. (i have had the best results with this method)

    3. Using a dremel or variable speed drill and a very fine brush.

    4. Hand painting.
    spinner2.jpgspinner.jpg
In the end the best I've done is shown in the pics...I know not to good. What I would like to is to find a current pachinko manufacturer in Japan and just buy the spinners direct. The spinners in the states that are available for sale on various web sites are either rusted or hand painted too. I really think these things need to be powder coated, but good luck getting that done in multiple colors and for less then 3 million dollars. Does anyone have a source that can get these spinners new or in excellent condition???

    Thank you

Japan's version of eBay has spinners. From the pics they look new or very close to it. For info on YJA in general, search on here for the thread specifically about it.

Until you find spinners you like...you may want to try this. I made this tool for repainting Spinners
Max knows a pachinko store in Japan. I expect they sell in bulk.

Looks like I should change my paint type to enamel model paint. I have been using the acrylics. I do use a paint stripper followed by a spray metal primer. Haven't really tested em. I suspect they will chip easy. Even having that really cool adjustable motor you built I would still be stuck with the horrible shaking hands I have LOL.

Who is Max and where could I get a link to this bulk purchase?

    Thanks in advance!!

Not my device...I just remembered someone posting about it...so I searched it for you, in case you wanted to try. Max is a member who restores pachinkos and is a very active member. Here is a link to the thread I was talking about. Back from another trip to Japan

I tried to copy and paste the URL into "Google translate". It does a good enough job of translating to English. Navigating the site and searching is a different story!

    Hello

A few of our members do source pachi items from Japan via YJA

Here is a link to our Japan Auction Area, where members often post items of interest they spot on YJA

The very first thread is a 'sticky' and explains a lot about the process, i.e. you need someone to bid on your behalf etc

Sorry I heard my name so I had to pop in.

First off your spinners actually look pretty good. I haven't been able to repaint some that look that nice. Also second, all spinners on vintage machines were hand painted. It seems like how they did them was they spun it and someone with a really steady hand just laid down the brush and made something that sorta looked like a circle around the rim.

Fast forward to modern times. On new modern machines I think most of them are done like a silk screen process. I could be wrong as I don't know for sure but that is what makes sense.

Also here is the link to that website pachiwall was talking about. pachinkoboy.com - Import Manuals

I don't think they sell spinners. Also you have to pickup in person with cash in Japan.

    Hope this helps.

That's the problem with this newfangled digital photography - everything looks terrible when you blow it up to 10X actual size. Sure enough when I click the thumbnail and see your spinner eight inches across on the screen and every bubble and wave shows up like holy cow what a mess and I kinda get what you're saying.

If I don't click then the thumbnail is about spinner size and they look just peachy. Wanna paint some of mine?

Give your spinners a nice sanding with 320 grit to get them smooth. Dust them with a light coat of primer, and then use the 320 again. Then hit them with some high-gloss white Rustoleum spray. Don't use the crappy stuff like Krylon, I know it is cheaper but the results are inconsistent. Use a variable speed drill to spin them at slow rate, and then paint them with acrylic colors. Once dry, spray them with Minwax high gloss polyurethane. Once again, do not buy the cheaper lacquers, the Minwax is the bomb. That coating will never chip in our lifetimes. With a little practice you can do some pretty intricate designs. Of course, if you screw up it can be a real pain to strip them back down to start over, so remember there is a good amount of time for the learning curve to get the technique down. Remember it can take a significant amount of time to do a set from start to finish even once you have the technique down. But if you are persistent you can really make some nice ones.

I wish to thank everyone for there input and assistance on this site. I have completed my first restoration. I have lots of room for improvement, but for a first go I think I did good. I replaced the cell and tore down the entire machine. Quite the learning experience. Darn spinners color doesn't match, but alas I was over it after stripping the paint off 5 different times and running out of matching paint. I will build a machine today to alleviate that issue. Here is a couple pics before and after. Note the silly spinners

Nice job and congrats on good work. Something to consider that I like to do as a reminder of the machine's commercial past and is interesting on its own, is to save the tax stamp. I don't remove it from the original cel but instead, carefully cut it out with scissors or an exacto and straight edge. Then glue it to the new cel in the proper spot. I've done this with all my restorations and "completes" the machine IMO.
