Default How to re-foil Pachinko Parts

I did a write up on how to re-foil pachinko parts on my website, I was going to post here but there is a limit on photos per post so here a link to the technique I use for re-foiling parts.

very cool and thanks for posting. this helps to address the problem of "rechroming" parts. in the past i've used a product called "bare metal foil" which works ok but their chrome foil is more of a shiny silver than chrome. i ordered some of the brilliant silver and look forward to trying it out.

painting playfield features is typically pretty easy since the areas are normally surrounded by a raised border. This keeps the paint where it needs to be. all you have to do is find a small paint brush and gently drop the paint in and coax it into the areas you need. you can use acrylics or enamels and ideal remove the old paint first but its not necessary, just make sure old loose paint is gone and the surface is clean. Either remove the parts or place the machine on its back.

I'm going to try the foil and the paint / stain too.

Only difference is the iron. Time to get out the Monokote iron!

It is different from Monokote. Two less layers than Monokote.

Recommendation is to use "hot sock" and lowest heat setting on the iron to start...

Yeah, I thought about that too. My guess it isn't the same stuff since monokote has a pretty tenacious adhesive and shrinks under heat. Watching the various application videos I see that there is a heat activated adhesive but it tears at the edges very easily. Maybe Mylar (BoPET or biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate) without a polyester backing for strength?

I'm interested to see how it performs on the narrow, raised edges on playfield plastics. In the past I've used metallic paint pens and the results are just ok. Its easy enough to do but paint pens don't reproduce the chrome or other shiny metallic original finish.
My chrome foil should be here tomorrow and I'll give it a shot this weekend.

Would love to post pics of planes but I haven't built and flown for 15 years and the planes/gear was all sold off 10 years ago. Started with an Eagle 63; what a big lumbering bird. Stayed in the 15 - 45 engine size always two stroke. Some days I miss it but not often anymore. There is a turf farm south of here that we were allowed to fly on as long as you picked up your pieces after a crash and didn't drive out to get your plane if it went down.

I was so depth perception challenged I had only 1 red stripe on the wings so I could tell right from left at 400 yards out. Always knew which way it was flying then

have you tried foiling parts other than a single flat surface. like a piece that has some depth to it. it would appear to me that it would not work once you are no longer on the same plane. like going 90 degrees off of the main part. does this make any sense? i am thinking about the coin insert piece on my arrangeball machine.
