Not sure what you mean by change the position of the reels. If you were to turn the reels by hand so you can wipe them (always with the machine off) it would reset its self the first time the reels spin. If you meant physically swap the reels, say 2 and 3 over. It would just cause the user confusion. As the machine would still play as normal, detecting the position sensor on each reel but all the symbols would be mixed up. In effect ruining the machine.

I was curious about this too, and so attempted to swap reel positions on my Popeye. Although the reel mounts looked identical, I could not physically swap the reels, they collided with each other if I attempted. If I swapped reels 2 and 3, 3 would strike 1 before it would secure in place. If I swapped 1 and 2, reel 1 would not fit between 2 and 3. There is a shoulder on the left side of the reel, that is of varying height and the mounting slots are offset slightly. Of course, it would be nice if they reels were clearly labeled "Left", "Center", and "Right", to aid in re-assembly, but I suppose the manufacturers did not expect anyone to actually remove the reels during the short service life.

As for affecting odds, remember that the reels display the logic within the computer. The odds are determined there, and the message is sent one-way to the reels to display the information. It would be like setting a dial clock back 5 minutes, and actually have time go backwards to that point. It just doesn't work that way. (Less I could change a lot of pivotal moments in my life.)

You can not swap reels or mess up their configuration while cleaning them. The CPU knows the reel and every symbol on that reels current position. The CPU knows this by the home switch and the stepper motor's position.
