Default Reel Stop Board fuse problem

So, I bought my first pachislo machine as a garage sale impulse buy and am actually kinda excited that it's a 'fixer upper' as I'm a glutton for punishment and love a good project.

I've been able to figure most of it out and get quite a bit working (this site has been amazing!)... except the stop buttons. The fuse on the stop board blows as soon as it's turned on.

I've done some troubleshooting, based on what I've read on the boards, and it blows even when just the power is plugged into it. (if I'm correct in that the power is the connector with only two wires that plugs in into CN7).

I'm not sure what I should do next. Nothing looks discolored or "blown" but I could be missing something that I don't know to look for. The capacitor at C10 and C13 have what appear to be scratches on them. The scratch not he one at C10 could be discolored but it also could be that it's old. (I've included a closeup of C10 in case that helps)

I've attached pictures of the front and back in hopes someone can help.

I'd love to be able to fix this board rather than buy a new one...

    Thanks in advance!!

In better light, I'm realizing that those scratches are just the marks to indicate the positive side... One still looks a little brown though...

Went to RadioShack and bought a different multi-meter that test capacitors and resisters... Should I just start testing them at random? First, googling how to test capacitors LoL

<Rant> I hate it when the board will just delete what I type, merely because I mistakenly clicked on a photo. ARRRRGGG!</Rant>

With that frustration vented. I will now just retype the highlights of what I had for you.

The blowing fuse might be caused by a shorted diode. This might have happened because 110VAC was input when it should only be 24VAC.

I would not focus on the stop board until you have verified that everything "upstream" of that board is ok.

    So some questions:
    1. What pachislo is this?
    2. Are you inputting 24VAC?
    3. If you disconnect all connectors from the stop board, does the pachislo function properly in every aspect, except the reels do not stop by pressing the buttons?
    4. Disconnect all connectors from the power supply, except the 24VAC. Does the power supply turn on, and what LEDs are on?
    5. Reconnect the connector that has the thickest wires. Measure the DC voltage at those thick wires. Measure the AC voltage at those thick wires.
We are trying to determine if there has been damage to the power supply.
    Please report back your findings.

    Thank you for your reply!

It's a Universal Blue "Flipper.".. I think I'm saying that right. I don't find very many of them online but that's how pachislodb refers to it.

If I disconnect all connectors from the stop board... everything works as if it were plugged in... except the stop buttons

I haven't taken it apart enough to get to the power supply yet but will try the tests you mentioned in a few days.

In the meantime, I went a bit crazy and decided to remove and test the capacitor at c10 (the discolored one) and it does show as blown. I also removed the one at c13 and it shows as fine. (the multimeter I bought had instructions for testing capacitors)

The problem now is... I'm not confident in ordering a replacement one. I don't know enough to make sure I got the right one...

Would this one be the equivalent? I'm assuming they look different than the ones made in Japan and back in the 80's but was thinking this looked right...

    Just an update... It's working!!

I replaced the capacitor at C10 with the one in my post above and now the stop board works!!!

Unfortunately Radio shack didn't carry it in store so I had to wait for it to ship. I bought 3 just in case I had a solder mistake and to help justify the cost of shipping.

I'm so excited that I just had to share

C10 is supposed to be a 1 uf @ 50 volt dipped Tantalum capacitor. It is polarized.

Thanks @heima... since I'd taken the capacitor out already I decided to try the new one before working to get at the power supply and lucked out!

@Ken Layton... ooh, I just realized that was the wrong link that I referred to. This is what I replaced it with.

C10 seems to be a common issue with the stop boards. I removed and tested every capacitor on my old Pulsar machine and although it looked perfect, C10 was out of limit. put in a new 1uf 50v tantalum and, PRESTO! Fixed stop board.

If others have stop board problems, start looking at C10.

Thank you everyone for the posts on C10 causing reel stop buttons to not work. Replaced with the recommended capacitor and my LuckyDuck machine is up and running.
