Sorry to hear about that Paul,
UPS are usually the ones that I've had bad luck with
But I guess any shipping company can screw up occasionally
Hope it's not too much of a hassle for you to deal with it

    Bad luck Dog.
That doesn't look dropped, it looks crushed.
Good luck with getting that sorted out.

Whenever I ship, its Fedex and there are two Fragile stickers per side. Also insured to the hilt! Knock on wood no problems so far. But...

And with me, there is always a big ol horse butt.

I used a Fedex Office center in Issaquah, Washington to pack and ship a prized pair of rare binoculars. I emailed and explained extensive instructions (with photos and diagrams) of exactly how to pack so that they would not be damaged. Nope, after saying they would pack it the way I instructed to do so, they did not. They haphazardly tossed the binoculars into a box and sure enough, it was damaged. It took some work, but Fedex paid the insurance claim in full. I actually made a little money, but I would have rather had the binoculars arrive undamaged.

UPS on the other hand, well, it ain't the brown truck, its the ... truck. You know what to think.

As for the post office, they don't do too bad for me. However, sellers who ship USPS often don't pack items very well, and so the items get damaged in transit. Its not the post office's fault the seller put a telescope in a paper bag. Freaking idiot. Seller had the gall to blame the post office for the damage. Yeah, and glass doesn't break when you drop it.

It is a shame courier services are no longer what they used to be. Now it is all about getting as many things to where they need to go as fast as possible with no care for any package. That is why when I ship a machine I end up adding close to an extra 4-5lbs. in padding. I haven't had anyone complain about a machine getting damaged.

Truthfully the best way to pack something is to wrap the **** out of it with bubble wrap and stuff the box with packing peanuts. You have to package something to be able to survive being hurled across the room (trust me they do that at times).

    100 machines and counting...

Didn't you know "fragile" is postal slang for "made of pig-iron"????

I find putting biohazard stickers on things much more reliable. Potentially felonious... But reliable

Yep, they don't make it easy.

When UPS dropped an engine, breaking a valve cover and other parts, I had to bring the engine back to a UPS distribution center for inspection. They denied the claim, stating that the engine wasn't properly packed.

Oh no, the box was professionally made for Kawasaki, for the engine. It was professionally printed with very large, clear and bold:"FRAGILE", "THIS END UP" and "FD501D ENGINE" on 5 sides. The inside of the box had some buffer material to accommodate some rough handling. But if you were to lift the box up, turn it upside down, and then drop it, there would not be much protection. Coincidentally, this is what UPS did. And the box traveled across country upside-down.

Fortunately the seller had a replacement, and I requested that he send that by Fedex, who delivered it in perfect condition.

I spoke with a packaging engineer at Kawasaki, asking if they have this problem often. He said that they have a test to determine if a component will survive UPS in particular. They put the component in the box, tape it shut, then throw it across the room. If upon opening the box the component is undamaged, then it should survive UPS.

The problem with the engine box is that Kawasaki did not expect just one person to be able to lift a very large, 80 pound box and toss it. A person might be able to lift 80 pounds, but the size of the box would make handling difficult. So, logically (and I believe by safety regulations) two people would be required to lift the box. Additionally, Kawasaki tries to strap the boxes to mini pallets, to force the shipper to use a forklift. The seller had removed the pallet years before shipping the engine to me.

I have other UPS horror stories if anyone wants to hear them.

Yep, I went on a rant about UPS and what everybody thinks is that they're automatically covered for the declared value by paying that fee.I know if I was someone else reading my other irant, I'd likely think "that sucks but he must have done something wrong" or the like. Negatory morning glory! You're very likely to get proper screwed by UPS if you or anyone else does the packaging and there's damage. They'll inspect it and say it wasn't up to their guidelines. I've had UPS package the last 6 arrangeballs I've sold just for that reason. If there's any issues, the buyer has to take it up with UPS.
