Default Best Method to Insert Brass Pin?

All - I am cleaning a Nishijin B that I got and noticed that two brass pins were missing in the playfield. I have a bunch of extra brass pins that are the same size from a hangar queen machine but noticed a slight screw-like twist to the bottom third of the pins. My question is: what is the best way to insert the pins without damaging the smooth heads? A small hammer with a cloth to protect it? Pliers? I didn't see any postings for this but could have easily missed it. I am sure there is a simple way but I didn't want to mess-up the existing hole (i.e., make it bigger) but futzing around with it too much. Any help would be appreciated!
