    Default Translation Wanted

    Hello all,

I know there are a couple of folks with knowledge of Japanese on the site, so I figured I'd give this a try.

My Android game Vintage Pachinko is doing increasingly well in Japan (40% of sales in the past 2 weeks). So, in the spirit of providing better service to our friends across the Pacific, I want to start providing Japanese language versions of my text, starting with my app name and description.

Most of the translation I've seen on this site is from Japanese to English. Is anyone confident enough in their Japanese to translate about 200 or so words of English to Japanese?

Heh, who would have thought that we'd end up exporting pachinko back to Japan?

Thanks for the suggestion. I've used services like that in the past to go from Japanese to English, though with less-than-stellar results. Based on one of these translations, my wife is pretty sure she won me from my pachislo machine.

I'm fearful the result going the other way may be equally hilarious - though it may go viral as a meme over there, hmm...

Do what I do, use two translators, and run them through several times.

    1. Create phrase in English.
    2. Translate to Japanese in Babelfish.
    3. Take Japanese from Babelfish, and translate back into English from Translate.google.com
    4. Does it make sense?
    5. (Optional) If it doesn't make sense, change text from subject-verb-object to subject-object-verb.
    6. Translate to Japanese in Translate.google.com.
    7. Take Japanese from Translate.google.com and translate back into English from Babelfish.
    8. Loop this process until there is some stability. Then go with the last Japanese version.

    Babelfish
My dog doesn't have a nose. (English)
    私の犬は、鼻を持っていません。 (Japanese)

    Goggle
    私の犬は、鼻を持っていません
My dog does not have a nose.

    Google
My dog does not have a nose.
    私の犬は鼻を持っていません。

    Babelfish
    私の犬は鼻を持っていません。 (Japanese)
My dog has no nose. (English)

    Google
    My dog has no nose
    私の犬は鼻を持っていません。

    Google
    私の犬は鼻を持っていません。
My dog does not have a nose.

At this point the Japanese doesn't change and the English is pretty much flip flops between two acceptable phrases, so perhaps this Japanese translation will make sense.

    A: My dog doesn't have a nose.
B: Then how does he smell?
    A: Terrible!

Alternatively, you can loop in one direction, not going backwards.

    Babelfish
My dog doesn't have a nose. (English)
    私の犬は、鼻を持っていません。 (Japanese)

    Goggle
    私の犬は、鼻を持っていません
My dog does not have a nose.

    Babelfish
My dog does not have a nose.(English)
    私の犬は、鼻を持っていません。 (Japanese)

You can see that with continuous looping the translation will not change. The difference between the translation here and the previous post is the comma.

Why does this remind me of a Monty Python sketch?

I'll have to try out this technique, thanks.

Because it was in a Monty Python sketch. Hitler told that joke in the Joke War Sketch. The joke used to attack Britain was the very bad "Two peanuts were walking down the street, and one was a-salted."
