Default iCade to PiCade mini MAME cab...

Just finished this... mentioned it before, but here's a few shots of the 99% done final...

IMG_0047.jpg IMG_0045.jpgIMG_0046.jpg (yes... I'll paint the P before iCade soon...)

Had an old iCade that was inches away from the dumpster - so instead I took a Raspberry Pi and 800x600 (old skool 4x3 aspect) cheap eBay-from-Taiwan HDMI LCD, rewired the bluetooth iCade with a USB joystick controller (eBay from China), and rigged it all together. Also two 2.5" full range speakers and 3x3W audio amp (eBay from Oakland, thankyou). Final piece was a surplus Iomega hard drive power supply (remember them?) with 12 and 5v with sufficient capacity.

To total it up (including shipping... I think):
iCade - I had one, but I see several on CL 30 or under
XinMo USB controller with wiring harness (easy swap on stick and buttons) 25
    2xspeakers+amp+knob 10
    1/8" plywood, painted black 8
RaspberryPi w/SD card (overwritten with PiMame) 40
surplus 12v/5v ac/dc power supply from ancient iomega hard drive unit 7
800x600 LCD with HDMI controller board 65
2 more colored buttons from Fry's for ESC and TAB functions 5
VArious vinyl stickers, screws, terminal block, hot glue, random crap 20

OK... thats... uh... $210? Not that cheap... but then again, I was able to pick the thing up and carry it to my brother's earlier to reminisce the old Oakridge "Time Zone" days for a while. I'd shudder to try that with anything bigger... or use something smaller (like a Caanoo) and get the same feeling - arcade stick/buttons and all.

I'm hooked. Gonna try and make a smaller, faster one with a Beaglebone Black, a repurposed arduino game controller shield, and an LCD cape.

What is "Time Zone" - a game? Looks pretty nice though and neat.

    SWEET!

I had a flashback with the "old Oakridge "Time Zone" days". How things have changed. Back then, we were happy with black and white, and bleeps and pings. And would gladly dump our hard-earned quater, (pinballs were just a dime) for the opportunity to experience a video world. Heck, in the arcade at BayFair Mall (San Leandro), they put the games into custom cabinets with colored bubble windows. I'm not talking Armor Attack here, I'm talking Computer Space, Space Race, Pong, and Qwak!. But Tank was the coolest, because it was black, white, and gray! 1975, old school baby!

Heima pretty much grabbed that... the comment was there for him and any other South SF Bay older folks... It was *the* arcade at Oakridge mall - pretty much the best place to go to see all the new games way at the beginning. Started by an Atari comptroller* who later did some partnering with Nolan Bushnell on the Pizza Time Theater chain. The Golden Age Arcade Historian: Arcade Origins

    * he lived down the street from my family for a while in the late 70's early 80's... you know who's garage every kid in the neighborhood was in all summer...

Back in the 80's I was located in the East Bay and frequented the arcades in the Concord/Walnut Creek area. In Pleasant Hill was another arcade that got prototype games. They would be there for a week or two and then disappear. Only to have the production model appear 3 months later. I played the laser disc version of Road Runner there.

So, should we have a little fun and talk about Polybius?

Great... great... you had to mention that. Now the entirety of Pachitalk has been tagged for deep-scan and is on an NSA short list...

Just doing my part to keep the legend going. Some kid has a heart attack playing Berserk (or was it Wizard of Wor) and all of a sudden, the Illuminati along with neo-Nazis in South America are creating a mind control device, disguised as a lame video game.

As a serious aside, you know there is such a thing as a "Suggestion Ray". Low energy microwaves, or very low frequency sound waves are modulated to a voice and directed to subjects. The subject will subconsciously pick up on the voice.

Also, you got to believe that the CIA and other clandestine entities have experimented with the affects of certain colors, sounds, and smells upon the human psyche. Maybe done with completely harmless intent.
