Smile 1953 Silver Chest Upright Pinball / Pachinko Machine

Is it a pinball, a bingo machine, a pachinko. Tough telling! According to the Internet Pinball Database, it's an upright pinball game...but I think to the purest, it's consider a bingo machine.

Regardless it works and it's fun to play. Purchased this last week and touched up the cabinet and playing field. It has 6 stepper units inside, so that took some work and lots of relays. The best thing about this machine though is how nice it is to access the mechanics.

The bad thing about this machine is the lack of info on the net. I did find another owner of this machine on pinballowners to tell me the correct operation of this beast. Thanks Rob!

So here's the machine before all the work...

Last weekend, I put together the main frame...tired to get it square and put the glass back in. The glass is two-pane glass that is sandwiched together. The smears you see is not dirt but actual scratches. It gives it character!

I had to paint up that playing field. Did as well as I could.

Notice the balls appear black, but they are actually glass...pretty wild!

Here's the insides. It comes apart pretty nicely, but when it's on piece, eventhough it's smaller than a pinball, I would say it weighs about the same because it's solid pine...hardly any ply!

Here are the touch ups on the paint. I redid the bottom of the letters, touched up the blue (not very well), and redid some rocks...

This unit has some interesting stepper units...ones I've never seen before on pinballs. Interesting one with switches too.

Here's some final pics and a video just for you guys! Over all it was a fun project (that still needs some tweeking), but it's very unique and will probably stay where it is for a while! Besides, I like pirates...especially the lady ones!

Excellent find Joe! Looks like the best of both worlds of pinball and pachinko. Like I said, I would have paid more but you seem to fall into these deals. ConGrats

Joe, Super cool find! Really different and the artwork is really cool. Very unique. Was it crazy expensive?

I also meant to say my 1934 Bally Signal and my 1934 Stoner Super-8 both use glass balls as well. The originals in both cases were badly damaged so I needed new ones. I was told they should be swapped out every 2 or 3 years to prevent playfield damage from any chips they may get over time.

Yeah...I think those glass balls are pretty cool! They don't look terrible, so I'll probably keep using them. Theres a little note on the playing field that says something like "all 8 balls should be used for proper operation.

Expensive???well more than a powerflash but cheaper than a arrangeball! So the price was right since I've been looking for an arrangeball forever but finally gave up!

It's been a really fun game and glad to get it working. Love the EM parts so it's just my style!

They look pretty good in your picture so you should be good. Mine were really badly damaged.

A lot more going on inside than my machines so would be intimidating to me but trying to make that leap...

    Really cool find you got

I think those arrangeballs look pretty intimidating! I think it's just what you get used to. I'm hoping to get a Chicago Coin Shoot Out game soon: Chicago Coin Shoot Out - YouTube

Now that will be a whole new experience for me!

I don't know what to call it. Miscellaneous gambling device doesn't quite cut it.

Hey look... nasty old selenium bridge rectifier. You might want to change that before it stinks up the neighborhood.
