Default I decided it was time...

For a REAL transformer for the Evangelion, and not just some wimpy Radio Shack 47VA model.
    Get yours here: Hammond 182S12 24 12V 225VA Toroid Transformer | eBay

And here is the data sheet http://www.hammondmfg.com/pdf/182%20Insert.pdf

    225VA Baby!

Foreigners (I am kidding here) can use it too, cause it will take 234VAC as well. Buy 4 and ship in a USPS flat rate medium box

Considering the seller has to cough up about $10 to ship these across the USA, the flat rate medium box to Europe is about $60. Thats an extra $20 for shipping or $140 for 4 shipped or $35 each. Not too bad.

4 would be pretty heavy, there is a weight limit on flat rate boxes out of the U.S.

I'll stick with my 240-24vac rated at 500va.

Daverob advised me against that for home use due to different machine current draws might effect the output voltage. ie with less load the voltage might increase. (I think that's what he meant )

    Those are some big suckers!
Well, I will let you know how it works out for me.
The weight of each is 4.9 pounds. So 4 of these is under the 20 pound limit for the medium sized flat rate box.
Hopefully a cool (temperature) transformer for the Evangelion.

I was thinking the same thing to replace my Japanese transformer. Yesterday I finally got around to crimping connectors for a terminal block and just installed the transformer in my Eva slo today. So far, nice and cool. Still need to replace the two conductor cord with three conductor to add ground.

NOTE: The GRY wire on the secondary for my transformer was actually Green.

Thanks for that tip Mandoman, as it looks like mine might be the exact same model as your transformer.

Well I got it yesterday, and the seller was pretty cool. The transformer was shipped with a beefy EMI filter, a terminal block, and a IEC receptacle, all prewired for 110 in and 24 out. I don't know if the seller will do this for all orders, but I definitely feel that I got my money's worth.

To keep mine neat and tidy. I superglued a terminal block to the top disc. Then joined the wires to that. It also prevents the wires from the transformer getting damaged. Hmmm is yours a 2x12v output wired in series to create 24v output? If so your va output would be half the stated value ie only 112.5va

Sorry DC, watts is watts, and VAs are VAs. Yes, it would be 112.5 VA off
each output lead pair, but 225 VA combined. You can think of the output
leads as providing two independent power sources. So you have 2x112.5
VA. Take a look at the pictures.
    kit.jpglabel.jpg
Also, the spec sheet linked above shows four independent windings for each toroid. Maybe you were thinking of a true center-tap?

Ah I see. Most transformers I see list the maximum total VA output combined.
This one has listed max per winding

Hammond Mfg. - Toroid Power Transformer - (182 Series)

    So you can have either 24V @ 225va (9.38A) or 12V @ 450va (18.76A)

You might want to double check your maths...

    24V X 9.38A = 225.12VA ie 225va

    12V X 18.76A = 225.12VA still 225va

so I can't see how you got the 450va figure?

It's been a very long day
I'm getting my parallel and serial mixed up.
But if the winding is rated at 225va and you have 2 in parallel your voltage is the same but you have a higher current.
At least I get a day off tomorrow. Or my head might explode.

I don't know if it's even remotely useful to anyone to see this, but pictured is the transformer routinely sent to us from Japan by manufacturers.

    have a great day!
