    Default Nishijin Single shot restore

    So last week,
I purchased a single shot from the local swap meet.
Sunday I spent about 9 hours on this thing before I had it 90% operational and a basic cleaning done.
(able to play one light bulb non functional from a bad contact switch, so I left the bulb out as not to drain the 9V.)
so far I had taken the front plastic and aluminum parts off, removed the glass pane, and frame to clean. installed (missing) the Tulip in the PF.
And then started a basic functionality check and patch on the back mechanics.
and ran quite a few balls through it and had checked my phone for the time, to notice it was rather late. So I cleaned up the mess and stopped to look at the original front side picture I posted here.
what struck me was I finally noticed the background was nearly cream colored to the naked eye but the photo had a revealed a pattern of like leaves and some red flowers.
what sunk in was that the background was sun faded, shook my head and said to my self, "time to brave the world of cell replacement.."
So thus begins the process of searching for a new background to replace the faded one with and, of course, a thread on this.
Because, (bum bum BUM!!!) it's my first cell replacement and figured why not record every step into restoration and customization doom..right?

    anyways,

    here goes..

Nice single shot! Looks like the lower tray is tin, instead of plastic! I haven't done a cell replacement yet...but I have a few that NEED it! You can get a new cell here: Pachinko Restorations - Pachinko Background Artwork ,or here: Pachinko machine replacement backgrounds . I have a couple already picked out that I haven't bought yet.

    Well Good news,
I found the vector I'm going to use in the center piece of the new cell. But I need to add some other elements as well.

So last night I pulled the front plastics again in preparation for the task and found that the paper behind with the artwork behind them was water stained and faded so I have started experimenting with different patterns behind the plastic facade. what do you guys think?

I didn't realize it was paper behind those parts. Makes sense though. I have machines that are really vibrant and others that are almost white.

Oh and I do have custom backgrounds on my site as well. pachinkoboy.com - Backgrounds

I know. The "Tiki Bowl" cell you did was fantastic!
    I really liked that re-theme.

I'd figure I'd give my tastes a spin to see if it's a winner..

    Also,
My buddy that I fixed his Heiwa Cosmo TIger came up to me today and said that he wanted me to keep it.

something about me not wanting to accept payment for the work and he didn't want his grand daughters (5yr old twins) to break it..

so now I guess the collection Grows.. lolz

Last night, I spent 3 hours starting to tear down the play field on the machine, and figured What the heck? I'm replacing the cell background.. Lets try cleaning the rust stains ( Left behind from balls passing by ) from the old cell. I have taken into account the "water stain" possibility from using a spray type, so I tried what I had on hand. Screen Shot 2014-02-13 at 9.47.11 AM.png this stuff works great! though it leaves behind the usual clay abrasives (powder when dry) but that wipes of with a satisfying squeak sound quite easily and it gets the ball tracks, and other marks our of the cell without leaving damage.. well I'll note this to be added to my kit on future projects. I'll have to check out the sealer they offer and see what happens..

    I'll keep you posted!.

well after a few weeks of messing around with the new background design for the singleshot, I had initially came up with replacing the cell with thisScreen Shot 2014-02-22 at 5.50.51 PM.jpg

further toying around resulted in this Idea.. Screen Shot 2014-02-22 at 5.50.08 PM.jpg and I liked how the Temple sat in the cell but I didn't like the Idea of keeping the background white. also there were some other elements in the original that I liked but couldn't translate well including the Blue printed portion by the jackpot window in the lower left of the machine. so I ditched it and was about to run it off for printing but then I thought why not add some other elements to the print to spice it up...

    well (drum roll please...)

and here it is and I can't wait till it's fully assembled!

    Screen Shot 2014-02-22 at 5.49.44 PM.jpg

Well guys what do you think?

so I have started pulling nails... lolz you guys weren't kidding it is a pain
after an hour I was only able to get the lower left nails pulled.. but hey I lucked out. the pliers that my dad had given me a few years ago had been modified for some project of his and already had a channel cut down the center of the jaws..

    also,

what to do about the dry rot starting on the top of the door? anyone?

spent a week polishing nails and decided to take the shortcut.. purchased a tumbler and let it do all the dirty work...

    Think it "nailed" it..

    Default Nishijin Single shot restore

What we have been doing recently is soaking the nails in CLR first the putting them in the tumbler with walnut. They end up coming out nice and shiny like new.

Nope. We run them dry. For pachinko balls sometimes I add a small blob of Turtle Wax Chrome Cleaner. Then we do a second round with clean walnut and nothing else.

For nail cleaning I use a 50/50 mix of corn cob and walnut in a rotary rock tumbler run it for 24 hours then polish nails with Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish

    Update:
Having received the Print for the background I spent the weekend stripping the background and starting the re assembly process..IMG_0757.jpgIMG_0758.jpg

    I think it's coming together quite wellIMG_0760.jpgIMG_0761.jpgIMG_0762.jpgIMG_0763.jpgIMG_0764.jpg

at this point, I only have one spinner to repaint so I've started with the base coat..IMG_0765.jpg as well as a the having to repair the butterfly, it chipped on removal. as well as the reassembly of the mechanics...

I've decided to also start re finishing the cabinet with the same color stain polymer because i think it really pops...

For the stain if you want something that looks like what it did from the factory (Not the yellowed color). We found Minwax white tint base stain in the color parchment is almost and exact match. Minwax Water Based Wood Stain - Fast Drying Wood Stain | Minwax

It is a very nice blonde color with a very slight tint of yellow in it. I have used it on a number of machines and it always comes out looking good. Then 3 coats of semi-gloss clear on top.

    Looks good so far.

During disassembly, I had inadvertently chipped a corner next to a nail hole of the orange butterfly that sat at the top of the play field. you folks probably could relate with the string of expletives that immediately followed. So I had started searching for the chip of orange plastic the vaporized into some other pocket dimension on the white tile floor of the kitchen where I had been working. I had given up and went the route of filling in the missing area with another material.. I feel last night I had accomplished this!. I did not snap a picture of the repair as of yet but I will tonight when I get home which will be at the 24hour later cure period for the epoxy I used to glue this piece of replacement material on with.

    Pictures to follow, I promise.
