I would imagine that surface preparation is essential to get a good, smooth finish.

I have seen that stuff before. I also talked to the guys who sprayed it on stuff for the Men in Black 3 movie. It is actually quite the process to put on. First you have to go and get your object as smooth as possible, then you have to go and put the layer of black paint on, then you spray on the chrome mix and then have to instantly rinse it off with distilled water. If you don't rinse it off quick enough it will burn the chrome.

I have seen other products that are similar but they still aren't terribly cheap.
