    Default 1934 Stoner Super-8

As promised, pictures of my new project. It is a 1934 Stoner Super-8. It is dirty and been in a basement or shed or some other such place. It is missing a few pieces. The tilt cup pedestal is missing. It is missing one pin with a spring on it which I am sure I can work out. It is missing the shooter tip so need to get or fashion a new one. It is missing the knob for the push rod to load to balls and will replace with a new one. It is missing a rod that was billed as "a magic button". If you wanted to continue a game but only reset certain balls into play and leave the others in their scoring position (I am assuming only the balls in the out section get recycled), you push the rod in and then insert another coin. It looks like it just pushes again another rod so will try to fashion something for that. And it needs glass. The easiest thing to replace. It has a transformer but it looks a little scary so I might replace or worst case take to somebody to check out and rewire to make sure it is safe.

Should keep me busy for a bit.

Very cool, love those metal castings. I've been to a couple pinball conventions that have had a section of these old machines. Gotta be a good place for info and leads on parts.

Thanks and I agree they look neat. Very ornate. And thanks I will be looking for the next local(ish) convention to go to. There is one in Allentown pa in the spring I think and I am about an hour away and plan on going.

Will share pics when cleaned up.

    Thanks again!

I took some pics of the inside to share. It is pretty negs being built. 80 years ago. If you look at the earlier pictures I posted you can see at the top a left channel and a right channel hole as well as one called super hol (not sure why hol instead od hole). If a ball is in one of the two long metal trap channels and a ball drops into the matching hole (left or right channel hole) it will drop through the playfield and land on a switch that will activate a solenoid that will shoot a rod out of the solenoid which hits a metal lever that pushes up on the area the balls sit on in the traps and snap the ball forward to the next scoring position. If it lands in the super hol it snaps both left and right forward. Kind of neat. Here are some pictures. It was much cleaner than I was expecting considering the outside is so dirty.

NP I thought others might find the guts of it interesting. The cabinet itself was really dirty inside and out. A mouse had definitely lived inside at one point. The parts in the pic are attached to the underside of the playfield and were really clean. Wires are completely cracked and need replacing but everything else looks great.

Just an update with a few pics of what little cleaning I have started.

I first started taking apart the machine and started cleaning the metalwork. The outside balltrack was a mess. As you can see it had a massive groove down the center that was very dirty and very rough caused by previous owners never cleaning or changing the balls I would assume.

I was was pretty sure I was going to have to replace it as it was so bad. I started looking for something to replace it with but was striking out. I wound up sanding it out with a dremel and then using steel wool on the whole strip working down from course to extremely fine. Followed it by polishing with brasso.

Before and after shots below. It definitely has a more brushed look now but I will live with that as it looks way better than before and will no longer damage the balls which in turn will keep it in a vicious cycle of cause morning damage.

Next I started working on polishing the metal work in the center of the playfield. I am still in the process but very pleased with the results so far. There are some dark spots on the sides but overall very pleased. I first cleaned with dish soap and water with a toothbrush and then followed with chrome polish.

Here are a few shots before and mid polishing. The one shot shows one side polished and the other just after soap and water.

Amazing what a little elbow grease can do. The majority of this project will be just that, elbow grease. I do have some parts to replace that are missing but most of the work will involve time, muscle and cleaning/polishing products.

Here are before and after shots of the playfield after cleaning and waxing. I still want to do a few more coats of wax and still need to do a little repair and then wax the channel from the plunger to the playfield. But already the difference is amazing. I had toyed with clearcoating the playfield as it looked so bad but I am glad I did not. I did not think it would come out this good. It still has issues but at 80 years old I think they are quite alright. I did lose a little bit of paint during the cleaning which I was not happy about but it needed to be cleaned and no matter what I did, I would lose a little. It was left unprotected for too long. Hopefully now that waxed and will be maintained, as it looks will be how it stays.

Really looks great. The wood grain now shows up beautifully. Makes me regret not picking up that Jennings Sportsman in good shape at a local store.

Thanks. Yes I remember you mentioning it, the sportsman would have been cool. The castings on the cabinet and legs are really cool. It is hard though if you don't have unlimited funds and space. I don't have much of either. . I unfortunately look mainly on price as I cannot go for some more expensive stuff. The Super-8 was $200.00 and I will probably put another $150.00 in it between misc. parts. The glass will be my biggest expense. For my Signal it was about $75.00 and this one is 2 inches wider so assuming it will cost a few bucks more. But as a whole, for what it will cost in the end it will be a pretty nice machine for a relatively low investment.

You can't put a price on the satisfaction you get from fixing a machine up. I'm surprised more people don't do it.

Agreed but some people don't get it I guess. Some people I tell about it I can see they think it is a waste of time. I don't get that...
