    Default I have the sickness...

I decided my grand-daughters needed a pachinko machine (is 3 and 4 too young?) because I only buy loud toys.

I found a NFL Football machine for $40 that needed a couple of pieces fabbed but works great. But here's where things went terribly wrong, the guy also had a ratty looking old machine I got for $20.

Now I'm hooked. It's an old Nishijin identical to the first single shot Pachinkojeff has here right down to the sticker with the building. I just have a different center.

Coming from old radios and cameras this is right up my alley, but i can see it getting out of hand quickly.

Anyway going through my clean up I've pulled all kinds of dirt and spiders and stuff but I'm stuck. I can't remember how to open the front to clean up. I had it open last week and now for the life of me I can't open it. It has a wing nut on a rod on either side of the back. What am I missing?

And nobody buy any single shots for a while. I NEED them!

Oops, I think you're referring to the NFL. I've opened that.

I'm refering to the older single shot. I saw something on here a few minutes ago about just the glass sliding up. Is that possible?

Maybe I didn't have the old one open. The 70's were rough.

If it don't have a chrome frame, then the glass slides up through the top. There should be a metal tab that blocks it from sliding. It should be spring loaded, and a notch holds it back to allow the glass to slide. post a pic of the back to confirm.

    Hello

    Welcome to PachiTalk!!

How wonderful that you are introducing your Grand Children to Pachinko, I don't think 3 & 4 is too young, just common sense things like: don't let them put the pachinko balls in their mouths.

I think Vintages are a great way to start them off. My own 2 children love pachinko, my daughter prefers the Moderns, like myself, but my son is more drawn to one of my vintages.

Welcome to PachiTalk and to the Dark Side of the hobby. It does sound like you have been hooked a bit, and that these machines will start to multiply quickly.

Pachiwall is correct - the glass slides up and out on the older wood frame machines. There are typically two wing nuts on the left and right backside of the frame near the top.

    Pachi1.jpg

You will need to loosen those wing nuts a bit until you can slide them out of the metal clips they are fastened to. This will allow the front panel of the machine to tilt forward out of the frame. Next you will need to slide the metal catch piece that pachiwall describes to allow the glass to slide up and out of the machine (sorry, I don't have a pic available of that part).

Hopefully this will help you open the front. If you run into any more obstacles or challenges, just reply to this thread and we will help you out.

Again, welcome to the forum and to the hobby!! Please visit us daily and post often.

Because they might get rusty, right?

    That was the ticket.

The damn thing was nailed shut with one nail through the top at an angle. But I got that out without damaging anything and it tipped forward.

I tipped it just enough to get my fingers on the glass and pulled it out. How far will it tip?

Dirty! I think it was stored in a coal mine or something. All this black dust and then you get to the nicotine. I just did a couple of square inches and underneath it's bright and clear. Fortunately I have the patience of Job so I don't mind spending a few weeks slowly cleaning it up.

I think the most fun is trying to figure out the little clues as to when it was made and what these men were thinking about while soldering little pieces together in post war Japan.

I'll try to get some pics soon.

Thanks for all the help and welcomes.

You shouldn't have to remove the wingnuts to remove the glass. However, getting a grip on the glass can be a problem. If you can't get it to "palm" up by placing your palm on it pushing up...a suction cup type dent puller makes a great handle! If I find mine, I'll post a pic.
The wingnuts, once unhooked, allow the front to tilt from the top. Once clear of the top of the frame, simply lift the whole front from a groove in the frame to remove the machine from the frame. When the frame is mounted in a wall (like in the parlor) the machines can be swapped without removing the frame from the wall.
Someone probably nailed it to the frame because the tabs that the wingnuts are hooked onto are often loose, bent, or missing. If all is tight, straightened out, and hooked properly...no nails required. I like them this way, even though I have no need to remove them. I would only fasten them to the frame otherwise if the parts are missing, or damaged to the degree that I couldn't trust them.

Speaking of old cameras...I picked this beauty up at a CLICK! camera store. Of particular note...it states that it was made in Germany, as opposed to West Germany. Poor thing was stuck in a store FULL of digital cameras...and hardly a single roll of film. I liberated it from its prison for a mere $20.00!

I've rescued a lot of working 35mm cameras from Goodwill for 3 bucks each. and made a good profit on almost all of them
