Default Wall cabinet weight a concern?

    Hi,

I am in the middle of restoring my first pachinko machine and when done want to build a cabinet and had concern with the weight to do a wall mount. It will go into my basement which has Sheetrock and paneling attached to the block walls. The basement was finished I am guessing in the 60s or 70s. If I go up through the drop ceiling I can see they used 2x3s rather than standard 2x4 studs. I have no idea how the 2x3s are anchored into the wall. Is there a concern with the weight of a machine and cabinet being mounted to a wall like that? I am not sure if I should do something with a base instead.

    Thanks for any advice.
    Mike

so long as the 2x3's are attached to the floor and to the ceiling joist you should be more then fine.. but a base built cabinet would be safer... (and allow you to rearrange at any time)

Thanks, I am not sure if attached to the floor or not and don't want to rip open a wall. I think to be sure I will make them go to the ground then. I will probably still mount it to the wall to be safe anyway but will have it go to the floor. I guess it will give me good storage that way underneath anyway. I have a ton of wall paint left over as I just painted all the paneling this year and will use it on the cabinets (I purchased a 2nd machine) to match.

Thanks for the reply and helping strengthen my concern. It is better to be safe than sorry.

I built a cabinet for one of my vintages and another like it (but much heavier) for a modern. I used a French Cleat attached to the wall studs to mount each one to the wall. I have not had any issues whatsoever with the weight of the machines fully loaded with balls.

A french cleat is the best way to go when mounting something really heavy on the wall.

Thanks, I used french cleats to hang a bookshelf I made in my daughter's room. It was really good for spreading the weight across all the studs as well. My concern in the basement is I really have no idea how well they attached everything. I would actually love to gut the basement but it involves too much mess and the fact I have like no money
