    Default Chicago Coin Mini-Baseball

This seemed like the most appropriate section to post this in.

I made a pilgrimage yesterday to pick up a 1972 electromechanical Chicago Coin Mini-Baseball game. A 50 minute drive, a 1 hour and 40 minute ferry ride and then another 1 hour and 15 minutes driving to get there, then reverse the whole procedure to get back home, adding an extra hour waiting for the ferry. I have to be a sucker for punishment.

I've only ever seen one other Mini-Baseball anywhere near the area I live since the 1970's to mid 1980's, when I had my own games and route, and there was a $1500.00 asking price on it.

The neat thing about them is that they're close in size to a Satomi Computer Pachinko, with the stand, and the flipper that you launch an 11/16 inch Marblette (Bakelite) ball with is very similar to a vintage Pachinko flipper.

The game is complete and fully functional except for the aluminum trim around the base glass, which is easily replaced. The steppers will be taken apart, cleaned, switches adjusted and wiper plates lubricated. The relays will have their contacts cleaned and adjusted if needed and all other blade switches will be cleaned and adjusted. Someone screwed an appliance switch to the side of the cabinet for crediting the game as well as some other wiring changes, which will all be restored to original.

The cabinet is covered in the original material of the era the game was built, MACtac, which is starting to lift in quite a few spots so will all be stripped off and then I'll decide what to recover it in.

The graphics do have some wear but the damaged areas are not backlit so they shouldn't be too hard to reproduce.

Overall the game is in great condition with most of the work being cosmetic.

It'll be awhile before I get around to doing anything with it but I'll definitely post photos of the restore process and a video of it in action when I do. In the meantime this YouTube video is filmed in low light which shows the action of the players running around the bases.

It's a neat game, simple, styled like a Pachinko and strictly electromechanical, except for one small solid state circuit board which has crowd sounds like you'd hear at a baseball game.

Love it!!! I've often thought of building something similar from the remains of a vintage pachinko. Wouldn't be too difficult. Now to go search for a circuit that makes crowd noises!

Since I've been working on my Chicago Coin Bullseye Pitch N Bat, your machine pops up quiet often (just because of he name and manufacture). It is a VERY cool game! They seem to keep up pretty well, because I haven't seen one that was in bad condition!

    CONGRATS!

So it's been over a year...did you ever get this machine back together again?!

    Whitedawg,
Instead of starting a new forum on this subject, I hope you don't mind me adding on to yours.

As I mentioned, I was looking for one of these for a while. I thought I had one, I was going to pick up in Missouri, but then he sold it to some guy in Canada...was that you Whitedawg? That was about 6 months ago, so I don't think it was.

So I kept searching and found a gentleman in Chicago that was willing to meet me half way in Iowa City, and I finally got my machine! I've been working on it for about 2 months and other than the sound card, things are coming together. Here's the progress.

The game wasn't too difficult to work on. Just regular chicago coin mechs, which I've worked on many Pitch n Bats which is really all this is. Dremel tool and mini wirebrush attachment are my friends! What was cool is that all the wire forms just pop out the front, so cleaning was easy.

Also, I was fortunate enough to find this package of balls on ebay....the actual balls that go with this game! That was a huge plus, because metal balls just don't belong in here and the one that came with this game was missing. It suppose to be a 11/16 marblette, which BTW is even lighter than a regular marble. I think a marble would work even better than a metal ball too.

The other issues I've seen with most these games is the wood shelf paper laminate they use on these games. I didn't really want to recover it and new it would probably still peal. Besides I was missing chunks of wood around the backside, so I decided to cover all the edges with 3/4 inch angle aluminum. Pretty easy stuff to work with if you have a scroll or band saw. I did a quick (and not perfect) job around all the edges and it matched the aluminum on there all ready. Most people that have played this game never suspect it was added.

And one more note. The nails above each one of the slots used to have material covering to keep the ball from bouncing so much (and probably scratching). Only half were there, so I removed them all and add black heat shrink tubing.

Thanks folks! The game is pretty fun and I love that it has the old school bell inside. Kids really like it! I went thru a lot of pachinko machines in the last few years (vintage and modern)...had about 30 up in the attic at one time! Matrix, StarWars, Kung Fu Panda, Tom and Jerry....and then all the other ones. Had my fun and sold them all, expect for these two. I have them on Craigslist, but I'm just as happy to keep them too! Still love my single shots!
