Question What classifies a slot machine to be a "Pachislo" machine?

I have a 1980's Universal "Super 5 Line" skill stop slot machine that uses quarters. It is made in Japan and labeled in Japanese. Pictures below. Is this a slot machine or a Pachislo machine? I am trying to research a technical issue and can't seem to find much on this in either category.

Is it labeled to use quarters or does it just work on quarters??

It looks like it says medals to me..thats what pachislo tokens are called.. Its made in japan, by a pachi company for Japanese voltage.. so I'd say its a Pachislo.. They looked like that from the 70s into the 80s..

Only a few members have had machines like this.. I don't think many made it to the US..

But I should say I really don't know much slot stuff, so I could be wrong about everything!!

I agree, I think technically it would be considered a Pachislo machine?

I believe the term 'medals' is used to signify 'Tokens' on pachislos

It's possible that at some time in it's history, perhaps your machine was 'altered' to accept currency?

have you tried puting tokens in it??? normal style Pachislo machine are set up to work on tokens.. there almost the same size as quarters but if we put a quarter in a pachislo they will pass right threw like you describe on you vid..

    ----------------------------------------------------

have you pulled the reel section out and tred to see how the stop buttons work?? how is the center wheel that is currently stoped (like it should be) compaired to the outer reels that are free spining.. and like wise why the center reel will not free spin after the arm is pulled...

my machine is a sega but its all mechanical in its operation.. so i have an understanding how your machine should work but with your electronics.. its hard to say where to start..

neat machine.. probaly be a hard sell in the usa but i like it as well.. good luck geting it fixed

I would try tokens for pachislo's. Quarters will spit out of the hopper if filled with them...but the coin acceptor will reject them for play. When you pull the handle, it sounds like a mechanical mechanism. The outer reels spin like a mechanical machine. Clearly the payout is electronic, making it electro mechanical. When you pull the handle, making the reels spin, can you spin the middle reel with your finger? What action spins the reels? On my mechanical slot machines, there is a "kicker" that strikes these gears.DSCF7200.JPG They are attached top the reel bundle at the right side.ball lifter reel assy 010.jpg This is a disassembled reel bundle showing only 1 reel and gear plate, but all 3 gears are side by side, on the right.Coin mystery 010.jpgLike this.DSCF7189.jpg Of course yours is probably WAY different, but I would love to see what is going on behind the metal plate with the counters on it! Also would like to know what stops the reels. Likely something mechanical coming into contact with a star wheel on each reel, but likely electrically activated. try to get some pics of the inner workings if you can, maybe we can figure something out.
    And to Pachitalk!

after watcing the vid i can see that the stops are fully released.. this starts all 3 reels spining.. but the stop slams back on the center reel.. (watch the vid.. the center reel mooves one space..

I would bet the problem is totaly electrical.. the Mechanics seem to work with out fault..

as a side not the self check in the vid seems faulty.. every self check i have see, cycles one time and gives ya results.. the fact yours keeps checking and checking seems faulty..

pull the mech out and run it by hand.. see how it opperates

aslo in your vid you state there is a motor... behind the cover.. there is no motor.. a slot of that generation works off of springs and clock works.. there is a motor in the hopper but the reels are spring wound.. pulling the arm loads the spring...

hope this is all making sense

Universal slot machines were made in Japan but they were used in US casinos, at least the more modern machines like the ones I have.
At least that is what I was told by the guy I bought my 2 Universal Ultra slots from.
He is the moderator for the Universal slot machine section over at New Life Games, every time I have had a problem with them, which is not very often, I go there and pick his brain.
The one you have looks like a hybrid of Pachislo / standard slot for sure.
Check out the Uni section at New Life Games Tech Forums, Uniman might be able to help you.

Sorry...I just went there and saw that you have posted questions about your machine.
Uniman should answer soon, sometime he takes a few days off.
