it the late 40's/early 50's us kids would just ride in the back seat,

we rode in the back seat of my dad's packard and his 48 chrysler 4dr

both had doors that would open by lifting the handle.

we would get bumps and brusies sometimes.

I was with him once and he had to jam on the brakes, I hit the chrome trim on the back of the seat and got a black eye

he said don't tell your mom, say you ran into something

Same here, In the mid 1960's my dad was driving us back from school in a 1956 ford country squire and a guy at a four way signal turns right in front of our car . I was in the back seat and got a fat lip and the front of the Ford got dented a bit but I got to ride in a 1958 ford station wagon while the 1956 was getting repaired . Don't know why Ford stopped having the engine compartment hood opening from the passenger compartment instead of the front

Gotta remember that seat belts weren't as advanced back in the sixties. My parents 1965 Falcon wagon was ordered with the optional rear seatbelts for us kids. If your car didn't have those, this aftermarket belt was probably better than nothing.

<rant> So long as parents take a hands-off approach to raising their children, kids are gonna get hurt, no matter how kid-proof you make a product. And so long as it is profitable to be litigious, people will sue what they believe to be deep-pockets, for a lack of their own common sense. Hence why you have ridiculous regulations, lack of innovation, and repression of products and services.</rant>

you wouldn't believe how many little kids in Florida got run over by one of their parents with a riding lawnmower this year!!!

one girl lost both legs up to the knees!! others had foot and leg injures

common sense would tell you to know where your children are and to check before backing up
