Default new guy in the deep end of the kiddie pool!

    hello all,
angry gary here. found your site while surfing for info on some machines i bought last week. i decided to pick up a few machines on the cheap to try to get them in working order to give the grand kid one, keep a couple and sell one. i picked up 4 machines for just over $100. i got a Mizuho hawk, a Nishijin b two rainbows, an okumurayuki that i cannot ID. it has three large hearts on it. and the fourth one i still have not picked it up yet from a friend who got it for me in baltimore for $20 i remember it being a Nishijin.

if i am totally stumped and it is beyond repair i guess i could strip it for parts.

after reading the site a bit i am positive i do not want to do full restores due to the cost and time needed,( and the fact i have minimal patience and skills to do what i have seen you guys do here!).

i want to clean them up best i can and get them in good mechanical order. i only have maybe 120 balls total and no trays. is ebay the best place to look for these items or do you guys have a secret club only supply source? i read minimal of approx. 300 for a machine but what 500 as a good number for each? i see balls are around $70 for a 1000. sound right? i am bidding on a lot of 1000 on ebay but you never know how that is going to go. and $13 for a plastic tray!!! am i missing something here?i figure on the ones i am keeping i could just use a plastic rubbermaid container and line it with something for noise reduction. but the one i want to resell i gotta go with something a bit more standard.

i will coming to you guys with questions in the near future so be prepared!

also anyone here in the Washington Dc area, Northern Va.? i could always use a local mentor.

    thanks,
    Gary

    Welcome Aboard

Although I will be in DC next week, I know nothing about vintage machines only modern. Best bet is to post some pictures when you can,
As for balls. Buy as many as you can, It helps when playing and helps the resale value

Prices, Don't know. I'm in the UK and only work in pounds and yen Others should be able to help on that

eBay is a good source for pachinko balls.

Disposable tupperware can be used for a lost ball tray.

I have lots of balls that I could sell, and It would be cheaper than ebay. Plus the shipping would be reasonable. The balls would be rust free, shiny and in very good condition. If you wanted to let me know how many you were looking to get, we might be able to work out a deal. And I doo have some pachinko trays as well.

I haven't bought balls in years, but I would say $.04 per ball or under would be good..But I haven't looked at ball prices in a long time..

    Welcome!

I got 500 balls from eBay for $35. Not the best deal, and probably not as many as I need. I think you'll get a better deal buying a larger quantity.

Good seller, though - nice and helpful guy. I had some bureaucratic snags with PayPal and he was cool about the whole thing. PM me if you want his name.

I have always used Goldenstatetraders1 on eBay for purchasing balls.

    Follow goldenstatetraders1 on eBay Profiles

They have been great to deal with and I have never had a problem with them. There are probably ways to get balls a little cheaper however.

4 or 5 cents a ball is a fair price.. but shipping might push ya to 6 cents...

please post a few pics front and back of each machine and any questions ya might have.. most of ys can help ya out with good quality pics.

there are a few vids in the sticky sections that can be verry helpfull as well watch them all and you will have a better idea how things should be working..

as for the trays just find somethign tha fits in the space.. most ball trays are either way to big or to small to hold anything.. i have a few vintage trays but i dont use them cause there to small.. and i have a few morder trays as well.. there to big to fit behind a machine..

    and of course

okay here are pictures of two of the machines i just got. the third is still in baltimore until next week sometime. the fourth one the seller called last night and backed out of the sale. that sucks.
the first group are of the Okumurayuki machine. i cannot find a listing for the name of this machine. so far all i have done was buy it and set in the basement until i finish with the first one. it is very clean except for the dust and dirt. the chrome face is really nice.

the second group is the mizuho hawk machine. i have taken some flitz and rubbed a lot of the chrome on the face. it cleaned up pretty well. i will redo it when all else is done. the wiring was kinda screwy. i have it figured out and i am just waiting for my LED's to show up. also the finger contact in the jackpot payoff area is funky. for copper it has very minimal conductivity. after cleaning them i still show a meg of resistance. i am going to change it out with a sealed micro switch once i can find one to fit in the compartment.

still have not run it all since i do not have but 25 or 30 balls.

Taking a risk that this might anger you...

Your mizuho is missing the shooting spring (or it's not hooked up) but what a beauty!

This is a good micro switch. Cherry D42L-R1XL

The plastic game housing might need to be notched, you might need spacers and to drill holes for the fasteners. You might want to cut off some of the long lever arm... or do your own thing! Anyhow, a low force micro switch is what is important; if you choose to go that route...

the shooting spring i have removed. it was pretty rusty. i was looking around hardware stores for a replacement. i can find the proper length but not the heavy duty ends that it will need. yeah i figured i will have to cut off some of the lever arm. thanks for info on the low force switch. it did not consider that. i will check out the cherry switch.

I haven't (yet) replaced my springs - which are awful and rusty as well. McMaster-Carr (industrial supply) has an amazing assortment of springs:

    McMaster-Carr

You may need a set of calipers to measure the wire thickness. I haven't measured my launcher spring, but McM stocks extension springs up to 12" long (un-stretched length) and an inch in diameter. That's a serious spring.

You can always double-loop the ends of a spring for more strength. Needle-nose pliers, a firm grip, and something to wind the loop around. It won't be easy or pleasant, but nothing succeeds like determination and stubbornness.

My launcher spring also has a tension-adjustment strip on the end. It's got a bunch of regularly-spaced holes that hook over a peg. I was smart enough to mark the "current" hole with a Sharpie before disassembly. Sometimes I get it right.

the anchor side of my spring also has the adjustment piece and it too has been marked! my spring also has a piece of fiber in it resembling a sort of foam wick, maybe about 4 inches long and about the size of a pencil in diameter. my guess is it is a noise damper.

I just quoted Gary a price of $60 shipped for 2000+ balls. Less than 3 cents a ball after shipping. Is this considered a fair price?
