    Default Sega Mad Money

Manhattan slot machine : Lot 471

An auction for a Sega slot. From what I understand, Sega used Mills' tooling and dies and copied their design. I've read that these imports are not particularly desirable by collectors here because of the foreign currency required and the internal mech isn't the same quality as an original Mills. Apparently a lesser grade of metal was used as well to keep costs down. For home use the quality factor is probably not an issue.
However, these old Sega machines of this series are attractive machines, came in various colors of that era, and epitomize the mid century modern look. From my point of view, if its a working vintage slot then it has to be fun.
First pic is of auction machine and the others are just examples of other Segas.

actualy the sega machines have plated parts so they wear better and longer then there mills counterparts... more and more sega machines have been parted out adn put in repop mills machines to increas there value.. i think its a sad state that these machiens cant get any respect.. of course this is from a guy with 3 actual sega machines and a sega knockoff...

if that is a real mad money then it will have newman on the reels.. it should also have lights.. but may require so rewiring cause these machines were used mostly in Europe

Can't zoom in enough to see the melon payout. That's interesting about the history and plating of parts and I had no idea that Sega was short for "Service Games" and was an American company.

Here's a sega branded machine and the 3 melons show a symbol, not a number. Maybe its a jackpot of sorts.

Here is what my Mills slot machine book has to say about them: Not much info, just 1 sentance. In case it don't show well:"The Sega, which was manufactured in Japan and was built from actual machine drawings of the Mills bell slot machine, is completely compatible with all Mills bell machines" I also ran across this: Early Sega slot machines - Sega Retro

I kind of surfed that site...can't really figure out how to use it. Looks like opening bid is $150. Good price to win it for, but depending on location...shipping could be a deal breaker!

Here's the info regarding Sega from "Slot Machine Buyers Handbook"
It basically says to avoid foreign slots for several reasons. One is the conversion to US coins. This causes reliability problems as the tolerances are tight and the coin payout slides depend on the coin thickness to pay the correct amount. Even if a foreign coin is the same diameter, its thickness is different. The solution is to change the coin handling parts but that's expensive and negates profits for the importers.
Sega did make machines for the American market but were made with soft, low carbon steel parts that also were not heat treated. According to the book, Mills executives kept getting reports of machines wearing out and general failures with their products. They researched the serial numbers and found those numbers didn't exist. An investigation revealed that the Mills machines had been copied and manufactured in Japan by Sega.
That's some interesting history but for home use they're probably fine. To me the biggest issue would be to insure that the machine is made specifically for a given American coin.

my (non sega) 6d machine works perfectly on u.s. dimes... probably works better them most us machines.. (for those that dont know Dime machines are damn had to keep working due to the thin nature of a dime..)

adjustments may need to be made.. my sega machine that is currently set up for nickels has allot of shim work done on the payout stack.. but any slot guy worth his salt can shim a stack..
    ----------------------------------
as for the metal being low carbon that may be correct .. but all of my machines have nearly no wear on them and most people that look inside are amazed on there condition.. possably due to the plating
    --------------------------------
with the better picture i can now see melons pay "jack pot" "jack" over the word "pot"... it alomst look like japanese writing... (thanks for the better picture)
    --------------
i would say, if you could get that machine to your house for 500.00 then your at even money after you buy the missing parts.. assuming its a working machine.. IMHO. its a 700 to 900 doller machine
    ---------------
its my understanding that when mills was going out of biz sega bought a set of low use dies and made there parts from thouse die sets.. so the parts are not copies.. they are exactly the same size and shape as mills..

Interesting info on dime machines. I've also read that in a properly adjusted machine, dimes are no problem. One source said dimes jammed the casino's coin sorting equipment and also that older dimes with higher silver content wore out and therefore the payout slides couldn't cope with changing thicknesses. Same thing (apparently) happened with nickel machines and Buffalo nickels.
The Sega machines seem hard to find and expensive. I'd be hard pressed to spend that much on one as there's so many American slots I'd like to own but the blue and green ones I posted are beautiful. Just can't find much info at all on them whether in the few books I own or slot forums.

My Brains Beer machine runs on pre decimal 6d coins.brains beer 016.jpg The coin acceptor is fairly modern and won't accept dimes. I never tried the payout slides with dimes. I considered buying a dime coin acceptor, but eventually won enough 6d coins and BellFruit tokens to run it on its original currency. Much happier with that decision! I only paid $140 for it in locked and unknown condition. The reels were thoroughly seized up and all was cruddy. I took it apart and was able to make it work again. I paid $350 for my Mills open front slot machine that only needed a little payout slide work, and a lot of cleaning. DSCF7122.jpg Not sure what a Sega is worth, but I would like to have an older one!

not to hard to find if ya think out side of the box.. most people that have them dont know there Sega machines.. like the one in the auction above it does not say Sega anyplace.. but its clearly a Sega machine... most of the time the price is fair.. except the ones that just ask way to much.. but they never sell at thouse prices..
