Default King Pin 1962 Pinball Machine - First Pinball!

Everyone is wondering why I've been unloading so many pachinkos lately (Matrix, Tom and Jerry, Kung Fu Panda, Powerflashes)

Well the wife made me a deal - "Get rid of those pachinko machines and I'll let you get a pinball!" Well, I didn't want to get rid all of my pachinkos so we made a another compromise (don't you love marriage!)...I can keep my older machines, sell my moderns (except for Star Wars of course) and I can get a cheap pinball!

We have a great Pinball Store here in town called Pinball Past. My good pachinko friend Adam showed me the place and as soon as I started to look at all the pinballs I was hooked! But I love the older ones, not just because of the price, but because of the looks and sounds! Lots of motors, switches, bells! Tons of fun! So I cleared out a spot in my basement and I put this restored pinball up and it works great! Kids love it and so do I! Gets played everyday! Cost: $550.00 which is about the price of a NICE modern pachinko!

    Enough babble! Here it is:

Congrats on the pin and welcome to the world of EM pinball machines. There's one of those here at a local retro arcade and its fun. I've distiller my collection down to these 5 after having about 15 at one time or another.

A great thing to get is a schematic for your machine and a few tools such as files to clean contacts and a leaf switch bending tool. Both are just a few bucks.

I see...says the blind man. I had to trim my by half to bring in my Star Wars. Now I have three. It's amazing how much in demand the Star Wars still is. It is fun to play. Fevered three times yesterday and boy are my arms tired.

Putting on a Gaku counter was mind shockingly easy. The lumina frame has a convenient location at the exit of the payout motor. The gaku is great for keeping track of fevers. I can only think the Star Wars will continue to be sought out. Although the new Vader Star Wars are hitting the market, something about the machine I don't care for. For one, I wasn't a fan of episodes 1 through 3, so there's a negative. Secondly, little anime characters are a bit off putting, prefer movie footage. Finally, if the Vader has a Jar Jar Binks within 50 miles of it, I'm afraid it would have to go.

Well, time to sign off. Gotta try and fever again.

Good luck on your Pins. Maybe when I move from my apartment, I'll look into it.

Emmadog...why am I not surpised that you would have EM pinballs! Just like an Arrangeball...right!? Except these are easier to find and almost the same price!

I'm pretty happy with my purchase! I bought another one called "Old Chicago" My father-in-law wants a machine really bad and I found this one, but it needs some work...I'm going to clean the stepper motors and hope for the best!

I think most of my arrangeballs were more than my pins. I routinely see EMs between 2-300 on CL.
Post any questions you have. I'm by no means an expert but I've gotten a few running after years of neglect.

Forgot to mention another valuable resource for these Gottliebs and that's a parts manual. Pinball resource reprints these and each one encompasses several years worth of pins. They're great because of all the exploded diagrams of the various assemblies such as stepper motors, pop bumpers, flippers, etc. The original part numbers and technical names are handy too when buying parts.

Emmadog, what is the name of the machine to the far right in the picture? It really caught my eye.

Ahhhh that would be Gottlieb's Sweet Hearts. A 1963 gem that's great fun. Its my 2nd one. I bought one and enjoyed it so much that when one in better shape came up, I bought it and sold the first Has backglass animation and every card's rollover scores a special (free game) when certain conditions are met. Extremely challenging and a great example of what Gottlieb excelled at which was card themed pinballs.

Wow, definitely going to keep on the lookout for one of those. Need to see if I can find a video of the game play when I have a little more time.

    The Internet Pinball Machine Database
Scroll down and it's the 2nd pin described.
There's lots of great 60's pins by Gottlieb. Probably at or near the top of my list is Diamond Jack, Flipper Pool, and Sing Along. The first two are add a balls which means you win free balls and Sing Along is a replay. I prefer AAB's but I love em all.

Not to pick nits, but I see you referred to it as 'restored'. If it were restored, it would look like one of Rival's vintage pachinkos...like it just rolled off the factory floor. What they have probably done is what they refer to in the pinball world as "shopped". When a machine is shopped, the playfield is cleaned and waxed, rubber bumpers changed, burned out lamps replaced, new ball and shooter springs, switches cleaned and adjusted, all functions made to work. I am currently finishing up shopping my Gottlieb Jungle. I like the old EM (electromechanical) machines compared to the SS (solid state) machines too. I just find it amazing what they were able to make those machines do with just relays and solenoids. No computers. Like vintage pachinko.

If you play your machine a lot, you may want to shop it once every year or two. A good coat of carnuba wax protects the playfield and makes play faster. Also, the rubber bumpers will lose their bounce, and if the ball gets any nicks or dents, it will eventually damage the playfield.

    Enjoy your machine!

I had a 1962 Gottlieb "Tropic Isle" a couple decades ago which I really enjoyed.

    NICE! Cool climbing monkeys!

I fixed up the Old Chicago and now it works like a champ! Went to my father-in-laws house and he's loving it.
